Lion Bridge, 2009
Lion Bridge Zoo The Lion Bridge was a 17.3 m long and around 2 m wide pedestrian bridge in the Great Zoo . The listed park bridge was located in the southwestern part of the zoo near the New Lake and led over a watercourse. It was created in 1838 based on designs by Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse and Christian Friedrich Tieck as a replica of the St. Petersburg Lion Bridge and was the first suspension bridge in Berlin. The filigree construction made of wood is suspended in two steel straps that hold four cast-iron lions sitting on high stone plinths in their mouths. The animal figures were cast by August Borsig at the Oranienburger Tor based on a design by a student of Christian Daniel Rauch . The construction costs in 1838 were 2578 Reichstalers and 21 silver groschen . Except for the lions, the structure was destroyed in World War II. When it was restored in 1958, the bridge was largely reconstructed true to the original. In 2008 it was banned due to dilapidation and in 2014 it was removed except for the lions. Plans for a replacement building were postponed indefinitely due to a lack of staff. More pictures at Commons cards

As a result of the growing freight traffic, the Westhafenkanal and its bridges had to be structurally adapted at the beginning of the 21st century. Therefore, the bridge was completely rebuilt between 2008 and 2010 using the abutments. The measure was part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 and cost around 6 million euros from this fund .

The bridge is 34.24 meters wide, has a span of 49 meters and a height of 2.20 meters.
