List of countries by Muslim population
The following list sorts countries and territories according to their percentage of Muslim population. It also shows the total number of Muslims within a country and, if figures are available, their sectoral distribution. All figures for the Muslim population are for 2010 and come from a study by the Pew Research Center . It should be noted that some of the figures are based on estimates. In addition, national statistics on religious affiliation also include non-practicing Muslims in the Muslim population in some countries.
In 2010 Islam was the second largest religion, after Christianity, with around 1.6 billion followers worldwide. It is also the fastest growing of all the major world religions. The countries with the most Muslims in 2010 were Indonesia (209.1 million), India (176.2 million), Pakistan (167.4 million), Bangladesh (134.4 million) and Nigeria (77.3 million .). The vast majority of the Muslim population lives in the Middle East , Africa , South Asia , Central Asia and Southeast Asia . In the Arab countries where Islam originated and was first spread, only around 15 to 20% of the world's Muslim population still live today.
The largest religious group in Islam are the Sunnis , who make up the majority of the Muslim population in most countries (figures are, however, controversial or unclear for some countries). The second largest community are the Shiites with a share of around 10 to 15% of the global Muslim population. Small minorities within the Islamic community are the Ibadites , Ahmadiyya , Alevis and Alawites (the last two are sometimes also counted among the Shiites).
