City map around 1900

The list of streets and squares in Žatec includes the most important streets and squares in Žatec .

The names were taken from old city maps and the standard works on the history of the city. The historical development of street names is presented, starting with the Habsburg Monarchy via the First Czechoslovak Republic to the current state in the Czech Republic after the peaceful revolution of 1990.

In the period of the monarchy up to 1918, in addition to the names from the Habsburg ruling house , non-political terms were mostly used. In Czechoslovakia, the "Law for the Protection of the Republic of March 19, 1923" (Zákon na ochranu republiky č. 50/1923, § 26) had to rename the names reminiscent of the Austrian ruling house. This law came into force on May 1, 1923. With this renaming, the names of regional German-Bohemian politicians (e.g. Theodor Hassmann , Hubert Titlbach , Ferdinand Wussin ) or German personalities (e.g. Goethe , Schiller , Jahn ) were used. Further renaming after 1938 should not be considered here. After 1945 the name was changed to Czech names, which only in a few cases have a reference to the old street name.

The following districts are taken into account:

  • Old town, including Burgstädtl and Schinitz
  • Lower suburb
  • Upper suburb
  • Mühlviertel
  • Industrial district on the left bank of the Eger

The historic city center was declared an urban monument reserve in 1961 . The cultural monuments of the city of Žatec are included in the list of cultural monuments in Žatec . Industrial monuments of the town (public and commercial buildings including the numerous hop trading houses) are compiled in the list of industrial monuments in Žatec .
