Live in Japan is George Harrison's second live album after the Beatles split up . At the same time it is including two instrumental albums of the 1960s, the studio albums, the two compilation albums and the first live album , the whole album 15 Harrisons. It was released on July 13, 1992 in the UK and on July 14, 1992 in the US .

History of origin

After the release of his last studio album Cloud Nine in October 1987, George Harrison became a member of the Traveling Wilburys group , consisting of the other members Bob Dylan , Tom Petty , Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne . With the Traveling Wilburys he released two albums, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 , which was released in October 1988 and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 , which was released in October 1990. In March 1988, George Harrison recorded the song Ride Rajbun with his son Dhani Harrison and Ravi Shankar , which was released in October 1992 on the compilation album The Bunbury Tails .

Due to George Harrison's financial problems, he agreed to Eric Clapton's proposal to tour Japan . The tour included twelve concerts in seven cities between December 1 and 17, 1991 and was Harrison's second and final solo tour. During the concerts, 19 songs by George Harrison and four songs by Eric Clapton were played in the middle section. Harrison only played the tracks Fish on the Sand and Love Comes to Everyone during the first concert in Yokohama on December 1st . On December 2nd, he played his first title again in Osaka . The tour went as follows:

Between November 4th and 24th, 1991 concert preparation in Great Britain was carried out at Bray Studios in Berkshire . George Harrison changed the lyrics of the songs Piggies and Taxman . As he added a line of text to the first title, he updated the names of the politicians at Taxman . Spike and Nelson Wilbury, both pseudonyms used by George Harrison on the Traveling Wilburys, were named as producers of the live album.

On April 6, 1992 Harrison made his first and last solo live performance in Europe at the Royal Albert Hall in London, at a concert in favor of the Natural Law Party, a small political party in Great Britain. During this gig he was essentially accompanied by the band that had supported him during the Japan tour, with Eric Clapton being replaced by Mike Campbell and Nathan East by Will Lee. Ringo Starr played drums on the last two songs. During the concert, the same songs as on the Japan tour were played only If I Needed Someone and Devil's Radio .

In the same year, on October 16, 1992, George Harrison had his last live appearance in front of a concert audience during the "Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration" in Madison Square Garden in New York. During the concert, various artists interpreted songs composed by Bob Dylan. George Harrison sang the tracks If Not for You , Absolutely Sweet Marie and partly My Back Pages . The latter two songs were released on July 19, 1993 on the CD album Bob Dylan - the 30th Anniversary Celebration .

Re-releases

  • The first release in double CD format took place in July 1992 parallel to the record release (double album) without bonus tracks. In the USA the album was released exclusively on CD. The CD is accompanied by an eight-page fold-out illustrated leaflet.
  • In March 2004 the album was released in a remastered version on CD at EMI with a new mix in SACD format. The remixing was done by John Etchells and Damon Iddins at Astoria Studios in London . The CD album has a plastic cover with a twelve-page illustrated booklet that contains information about the songs. The design is by Drew Lorimer.

Single releases

No single releases from the album were made internationally.

In France, the CD single Here Comes the Sun / My Sweet Lord was released in 1992.

Others

Warner Brothers released the promotional CD Live in Japan Sampler with the titles Taxman , Dark Horse , Cheer Down , Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps .

On the DVD The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 concert film recordings of four songs were published ( Cheer Down , Devil's Radio , Cloud 9 and Taxman ), which suggests that there are other film recordings of the Japan tour.
