The area of the 2.2 km² former municipal area includes a section in the central Broyetal. The main part of the area is taken up by the flat valley plain of the Broye, with mostly the railway line forming the western boundary. To the east, the communal soil extended into the densely wooded valley of the Dorfbach and the adjacent Molasse heights . On the plateau of Les Corvets is 601  m above sea level. economy

Marnand was a predominantly agricultural village until the 20th century . Even today, arable farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. In the 19th century, the place served as an important post office on the Bern-Lausanne road until the opening of the railway line, which is still evident today in inns and stables. Today there are some jobs in local small businesses and in the service sector.

traffic

Marnand has good transport links. It is located on the relatively busy main road 1 from Lausanne via Payerne to Bern , which was the main axis from Bern to western Switzerland before the motorway was built. On August 25, 1876, the Payerne-Moudon railway with the Granges-Marnand station on the municipal border between Marnand and Granges-près-Marnand was put into operation.

history

The place name is derived from the French word marne ( marl ). Since the Middle Ages, Marnand has been under the rule of Villarzel, which in turn belonged to the Bishop of Lausanne. By dividing an inheritance, the village and Trey formed its own small lordship since 1511. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Moudon . At the beginning of the 18th century, the rule of Marnand was purchased directly from the Vogt of Moudon. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Marnand belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Payerne district.

Attractions

Marnand Castle is slightly elevated north of the village. The manor house with two garden pavilions and a manor in the Bernese style was built in the middle of the 18th century.
