Michal Kempný (born September 8, 1990 in Hodonín , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been playing in the National Hockey League's position of defender with the Washington Capitals since February 2018 . With the team he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs .
Career
Kempný learned to play ice hockey in the youth department of the SHK Hodonín , the club of his hometown. He spent the last years of his junior career until 2008 with the B and A juniors of the Slovak club HK 36 Skalica , where he also made his professional debut in the Slovak extra league in the 2007/08 season . For the 2008/09 season , the defender returned to his home country and joined HC Kometa Brno , who was playing in the second-class first division at that time . In addition to appearances for the men's team, Kempný was also used for the A-Juniors and on loan for his home club SHK Hodonín.
In the following three years the defender was contractually bound to HC Kometa Brno, who had dared to make the leap into the Czech extra league by purchasing a license for the 2009/10 season . Kempný came there again and again in the course of the three game years, but this time was also marked by loans. He therefore spent large parts of the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons in the first division - first at SK Horácká Slavia Třebíč and later at HC Rebel Havlíčkův Brod , for which he also played three more games in the 2011/12 season . During this season he was mainly in action for Brno. With the team he celebrated the runner-up at the end of the season, before he left the club after four years and moved to league rivals HC Slavia Prague .
In his new club, Kempný became a regular player and played 51 games in the course of the year. Nevertheless, he returned to Kometa Brno after the season and confirmed there the performances of the previous season. He also won the country's runner-up title with the team. The defensive player made his final breakthrough on the European continent in the 2014/15 season , when he scored 29 points in 43 games , thereby proving his offensive qualities. This earned the 24-year-old an offer from HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League in April 2015 , to which he finally switched for a year in the 2015/16 season. Here, too, the Czech was able to convince with 21 points in 59 games and received an offer from the National Hockey League after his one-year contract expired in May 2016 . There the Chicago Blackhawks secured the services of the undrafted free agent .
About the pre-season training camp in September Kempný earned a place in the squad of the NHL club from Chicago and celebrated his season opener on October 12th. He was then regularly on the ice for Chicago until he was given to Washington Capitals in February 2018 in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . With the Capitals, he won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history in the following playoffs in 2018 . The defense attorney then signed a new four-year contract in Washington, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 2.5 million.
International
At the international level, Kempný was active in both the junior and senior sector. For the Czech junior team he ran from 2007 on and was used for the first time at an international tournament at the U18 Junior World Championship 2008 of Division I in Toruń, Poland . The defender contributed two assists in five tournament games for promotion to the top division. Two years later he ran again for the Czech Republic at the U20 World Junior Championship in Canada in 2010 and reached seventh place.
Kempný has been part of the men's squad since the 2014/15 season when he made his first appearances on the Euro Hockey Tour . In international tournaments, he first appeared at the 2016 World Cup in Russia , which the Czechs finished in fifth place. The defender collected two assists in eight matches and secured a place in the squad for the World Cup of Hockey 2016 in Toronto, Canada, a few weeks later . He missed the 2015 home World Cup due to a shoulder injury.
