This page gives an overview of the museums in the Ruhr area . With over 200 museums , the Ruhr area forms one of the largest and most extensive museum landscapes in Germany.
The spectrum of museums and exhibitions in the Ruhr area ranges from archaeological collections and church treasures to contemporary art museums; from local history museums to natural history, technology and industrial museums, to specialty museums, mainstream and curiosities. The focus of the museums and exhibitions lies in the medieval and industrial past of the metropolitan region, as well as its present post-industrial, cultural diversity. In recent years - but especially since the events of the RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture , a more integrated museum landscape has emerged in the Ruhr Metropolis . In addition, many industrial monuments without a fixed exhibition offer can be accessed via the Route of Industrial Culture.
Opened in 1883, the Museum for Art and Cultural History Dortmund is the oldest museum in the metropolitan region; the Folkwang Museum is now the largest museum in the region with around 800,000 annual visitors. The main sponsors of the museums are the cities and municipalities of the Ruhr area, but also various federal agencies, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , the regional associations for Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) and the Rhineland (LVR), as well as numerous commercial enterprises and non-profit foundations and associations. The museums are assigned according to their main collection areas or focal points and the museum types defined by the Institute for Museum Research .
