The 1949-50 NBA season was the NBA's first season after the Basketball Association of America merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association . Although it is not officially the first NBA season, it is the first under the name NBA. At the end of the season, the Minneapolis Lakers defeated the Syracuse Nationals 4-2 in games and became champions.
Season Notes
- The bankrupt Indianapolis Jets , which had received a $ 30,000 loan from the BAA for last year's gaming operations, and the Providence Steamrollers ended gaming operations after the 1948–49 season .
- President Maurice Podoloff earned $ 8,000 between June 1948 and May 1949. The BAA's operating expenses totaled $ 121,131 according to the financial report.
- Six teams from the National Basketball League ( Anderson Packers , Denver Nuggets , Sheboygan Red Skins , Syracuse Nationals , Tri-Cities Blackhawks and the Waterloo Hawks ) now also played in the league and the NBL expansion team, the Indianapolis Olympians , was also included in the league.
- The league was divided into three divisions.
- On November 24, 1949, there were 59 for the time being the most converted free throws in the game Syracuse against Anderson. The records of total free throws converted (59 by the Nationals, 57 by the Packers), free throw attempts (86), total free throw attempts (160), individual fouls (Anderson 66) and total individual fouls (122) even stand to this day (2018). However, the game also saw five extra times.
- On March 10, 1950 there were with 51 the provisional most assists of a team in the game of Sheboygan Red Skins against the Denver Nuggets.

- With 297 George Mikan committed the most fouls , as well as in the next two seasons. Most individual fouls in NBA history in a game committed Don Otten of the Tri-Cities Blackhawks with eight on November 24, 1949 in the away game against the Sheboygan Red Skins . His team also had the highest foul rate ever (32.1 fouls per game) that season.
- Mikan got 27.4 points per game. He had the fifth best field goal rate with 40.7%.
- Andy Phillipp from Chicago had with 377 assists 5.8 assists per game and thus a better rate than Dick McGuire with his 386 assists (5.7 assists per game).
- Up until the 1968/69 season , the statistics in the " points " and " assists " categories were based on the overall performance and not the rate per game. Rebounds have only been recorded since the 1950/51 season .

Playoff results
The tie-breaks of the Central Division for the first and third place with equal points took place on March 20 and 21. Both games are not included in the playoff balance.
The actual playoffs began on March 21st and were played in the first rounds of the division semifinals, the division finals and the championship semifinals according to the "Best of Three" mode, the NBA finals according to the "Best of Seven" mode . The division winner with the highest ranking in the regular season and with the best record got a bye for the NBA finals, while the division winners who were worse placed in the regular season had to contest a semi-final to get into the NBA finals.
