NGC 3404 = IC 2609 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Water Snake in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 198 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years in diameter. 
The galaxies NGC 3402 , NGC 3421 , NGC 3422 , IC 652 are located in the same area of the sky .
The supernova SN 2008bt ( type Ia ) and the SN candidate NAME PS 15afa (type II?) Were observed here.
The object was discovered in 1880 by the British astronomer Andrew Ainslie Common .
