The airport is also connected to the surrounding cities by numerous bus routes.
AirTrain Newark
The AirTrain in Newark is an airport train ( monorail ) which connects the three terminals, all parking garages and the airport train station. The AirTrain Newark is three kilometers long and entered service after the completion of the new Terminal C in the early 1990s. Like Newark Airport, it is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey .
The Newark AirTrain stops at P1, P2 and P3, followed by Terminals A, B and C, P4 and the Newark Liberty International Airport Station.
The AirTrain can be used free of charge between the car parks and the terminals. Travel to or from the airport train station is $ 5.50. The fee is already included in the tickets issued by Amtrak and NJ Transit.
history
The airport opened as Newark Metropolitan Airport on October 1, 1928 , and was the first airport near New York.
As early as 1935, the airport got the world's first commercial aircraft terminal. Newark was the busiest airport ever until New York's second LaGuardia airport opened in 1939. At the beginning of the Second World War , however, Newark was closed to passenger traffic and served as a logistical base for the US Army throughout the war .
In 1948, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over the airport; passenger traffic was then quickly resumed. Among other things, the infrastructure was greatly expanded with new runways and hangars. Until the opening of the North Terminal in 1953, there was only one main building.
In the 1970s, the airport slowly rose to the “International Airport” category. In 1973 Terminals A and B were built and the airport was now called Newark International Airport .
In the 1980s, Newark developed even faster. The first Atlantic flights took off in 1984 from Newark to London (flown by Virgin Atlantic Airways ). This gradually brought more and more traffic to the airport. Continental Airlines built a hub for its flight connections in Newark. In 1987 the north terminal was demolished and in 1988 the new Terminal C was opened. There, United Airlines , formerly Continental Airlines, its main terminal; most of the line's flights are served from here. In 1996 the new International Arrivals Hall was opened in Terminal B and the AirTrain connections between the terminals and the parking garages began.
On September 11, 2001, a Boeing 757 took off from Newark on United Airlines Flight 93 to fly to San Francisco. The machine was kidnapped by terrorists about an hour after it took off and is now heading for Washington, DC According to official reports, passengers attempted to regain control of the machine, but failed, and the plane crashed in Shanksville , Pennsylvania on a Field. As a result, the addition "Liberty" was added to the name of the airport. See: Terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
In 2003, Newark was honored with connections to Hong Kong , Singapore and New Delhi to the airport with the furthest non-stop connections.

The cross wind runway 11/29 is the shortest runway at the airport with a length of 2073 meters. All runways are 46 meters wide. The runways 04R / 22L and 11/29 are paved with asphalt, while the runway 04L / 22R is partly made of asphalt and concrete. Except for runway 11, all runways are equipped with instrument landing systems.
