Nico Santos (* 7. January 1993 in Bremen as Nico Wellenbrink ) is a German he singer-songwriter . His most successful pieces are Home (with Topic ), Rooftop , Safe and Better . As a co-author, he was involved in titles on Bushido's and Shindy's album Cla $$ ic , Mark Forster's single Wir sind Groß and Helene Fischer's single Achterbahn .

Private

Santos is the son of actor Egon Wellenbrink and his wife Lisa. His sister from his father's first marriage, Susanna Wellenbrink , and her daughter Mia-Sophie work as actresses. There is another sister, Clarissa, who is younger than Nico and studies in Palma. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to the Spanish island of Mallorca . He attended the primary school in Es Capdellá, where, in addition to his mother tongue, he was also taught in Spanish and Catalan . In addition to his music career, he worked as an animator in a club hotel on Mallorca .

His parents each had their own bands and supported him. At the age of five, he and his sister Clarissa recorded their first stanzas for children's radio plays in their father's studio. He also received piano lessons from the age of six and continued to learn to sing and dance. At a young age he performed at festivals in Spain and played songs produced by himself and his father. Appearances followed in Germany, one of them together with Max Mutzke , Aura Dione and Robyn for ProSieben . He uploaded both cover songs and his own compositions, including Eres Perfecta , to YouTube . This song became a surprise success and was clicked several hundred thousand times within a very short time.

In 2012 he teamed up with the US rapper KY. Together they appeared as KY & Nico . In 2013 the duo separated. In the spring of 2013, Santos met hip-hop producer B-Case , who was active in house music at the time . Together they wrote several pieces, the first result of which was the song Feel It , which B-Case had been planning with Jack Holiday and Tony T. for a long time .

In early 2014, he and B-Case recorded the song Lucky L , which is based on the cartoon character Lucky Luke . The song surpassed the success of Feel It and moved up to number 6 in the international DJ charts, number 19 on iTunes and number 5 in the Bravo charts. There he stayed in the top 10 for over 10 weeks. A few weeks later they released an acoustic version of the track. The song Symphony made it into the German mainstream airplay and Bravo reader charts in October 2014 .

Parallel to his collaboration with B-Case, he recorded the song Holding On with the Swiss DJ and producer Mr Da-Nos in 2015 , which became the title song of the German movie 3 Turks and a Baby . With Holding On , Santos made it into the official Swiss single charts for the first time. In 2016 the song Home was released , which was created in collaboration with the musician Topic. In Germany and Austria, Home moved up to number twelve and ten, in Australia it reached number eleven in the official charts and was awarded platinum . Another single followed together with Micar under the title Brothers in Arms , which also represents deep house. In Portugal, he achieved commercial success in the spring with the Tropical House single Waterfalls in collaboration with Lvndscape and Holland Park .

In April 2017 the single Goodbye to Love was released , which is featured by the Norwegian DJ duo Broiler . In the late summer of 2017, Santos released the first single from his debut solo album. This was called Rooftop , and during the autumn it developed into a commercial success in several European countries and reached top 10 placements in Germany and Austria. Chris Cronauer and Michelle Leonard , among others, supported him in songwriting. In the late summer of 2017, Haie also appeared as a guest contribution to the collaboration album Royal Bunker by Sido and Kool Savas .

After the songs Safe and Oh Hello appeared as further single releases, Santos released his debut album Streets of Gold in October 2018 . This was able to enter the official album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the following year a deluxe version of the album was released with a selection of other songs, including the song Unforgettable , which made it into the top 5 of the German airplay charts. In August 2019, Nico Santos published the song Better , which was a collaboration with the German singer Lena Meyer-Landrut , for which he was active as a songwriter several times. The song became a commercial success in Germany and Austria. In October 2019 the German rapper Capital Bra released his first collaboration album Berlin Leben 2 together with Samra , in which Santos lent his voice to the song Purple Rain . The track managed to enter the German single charts. Another solo release followed in November 2019 with the single Play with Fire , which stayed at number two in the German airplay charts for over a month. Also in 2019 he released the duet Fuego with Álvaro Soler , his first song in Spanish.

In March 2020, Like I Love You, the second single colloboration with Topic was released. In order to promote the song, a joint live appearance took place on the Sat.1 show Luke! The school and me . The single reached position 30 in the single charts and sixth on the airplay charts.

Santos is one of the seven participants in the 7th season of  Sing My Song - The Exchange Concert .

On May 16, 2020, he was the first to win the Free European Song Contest initiated by Stefan Raab and broadcast by ProSieben . Santos competed for Spain.

Career as a songwriter and producer

In 2015 there was the first collaboration with the German producer duo Djorkaeff & Beatzarre , who have also worked closely with B-Case for a long time. He initially described himself as an “intern who worked his way up to become a pianist and background singer”. Together they produced the soundtrack for the film Fack ju Göhte 2 . The songs he's sung It's Gonna Be Alright and Here Comes the Sun became the most successful songs on the CD in download portals. Also included was the song Don't Give Up on Us , written by him and interpreted by Janieck Devy . They also wrote the song Promised Land together for the Jamaican singer Omi , who celebrated his worldwide breakthrough with cheerleaders in the same year . In November 2015 Bushido and Shindy released the studio album Classic , the pieces of which were also penned by Djorkaeff, Beatzarre and Santos.

Together with Mark Forster and Djorkaeff & Beatzarre, he wrote the song Wir sind große , which became a top 10 hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The song was used as the official EM song of ZDF in 2016 and was awarded platinum. At the same time, the third studio album by German rapper Shindy, Dreams, was released . Here he supported Djorkaeff & Beatzarre on several tracks. It was similar with the albums Rumble in the Jungle by Ali Bumaye , Nothing Was Free by Prince Pi and Black Friday by Bushido. In January 2017, the Tatort Söhne & Väter was broadcast, for which Santos, Djorkaeff & Beatzarre, B-Case and Michael Beckmann wrote the soundtrack.

In June 2017 the German singer Lena Meyer-Landrut presented the song If I Wasn't Your Daughter , which she had written together with Santos and Djorkaeff & Beatzarre. Lena is also accompanied by Santos on the piano. The song was part of their fifth studio album Only Love, L to which Santos also contributed the song Love , which he wrote in collaboration with the German producer team Beatgees .

In 2018 there were several collaborations with B-Case and the Spanish musician Juan Magán. The songs Escondidos and Déjate llevar were created together , of which the latter in particular developed into a great success in the Spanish single charts and was awarded multiple platinum. The collaboration with Djorkaeff & Beatzarre was also continued; So they wrote the top 10 hit Thousand Tattoos by Sido , which was part of the studio album Kronjuwelen produced by Djorkaeff & Beatzarre . Together with the German producer team Hitimpulse he wrote the future bass track Like This by the Italian DJ and producer Arcando.

There were further collaborations with Djorkaeff & Beatzarre in 2019, which resulted in the songs Purple Rain by Capital Bra and Samra , Meine 3 Minuten by Freschta Akbarzada and Sido and 501 by SDP and Teesy. Another Hitimpulse collaboration followed with the song Sink Deeper, written together for MOTi and Icona Pop .

Acting career

In 2007 and 2008 Santos was featured in several commercials for the fashion company C&A . In 2015 he was seen for five episodes as Tiger Rat aka Malcom Baker in the German daily soap Rote Rosen . There he embodies a British musician who is on the run from groupies.
