The Oiltanking GmbH is one of the largest independent logistics service provider of tank storage for petroleum products , chemicals and gases . The company, founded in 1972, belongs to Marquard & Bahls AG and is based in Hamburg . It owns and operates a total of 70 tank terminals in 23 countries with a total capacity of over 20 million cubic meters (as of September 2019).

Oiltanking customers include private and government oil companies, refineries , petroleum companies, and distributors of petroleum , petroleum products, vegetable oil products , chemicals and gases. The company offers them tank space and the associated service. The stored substances are not the property of Oiltanking, but the property of the customers who then rent the tank space.

The company stores crude oil and mineral oil products in 20 countries, biofuels in eight countries , chemicals in 13 countries and gases in six countries.

Oiltanking is also involved in the pipeline transport business in eight countries .

About IOT Infrastructure & Energy Services Ltd. the company offers special engineering services, particularly in Asia and the Middle East , which include the development, planning and construction of tank terminals as well as corresponding auxiliary and ancillary systems.

Oiltanking is the most important pillar of Marquard & Bahls AG and is divided into more than 100 companies around the world, many of which operate as independent profit centers . The majority of these companies (around 50) are included in the consolidated financial statements of Marquard & Bahls, the others are associated companies .

Management and staff

Matti Lievonen, Managing Director , heads the company broken down by world region. In 2018, Oiltanking employed 3,274 people, that is 43.3 percent of all employees in the Marquard & Bahls Group.

The company is active in 23 countries worldwide, namely in Argentina , Belgium , Brazil , Bulgaria , the People's Republic of China , Germany, Denmark , Finland , India , Indonesia , Colombia , Malta , Mexico , Mozambique, the Netherlands and Oman , in Panama , Peru , Singapore , South Africa , Hungary , the United States and the United Arab Emirates .

The German locations are Bendorf , Berlin , Bremen , Chemnitz , Deggendorf , Duisburg , Frankfurt am Main , Gera , Hamburg, Hamm , Hanau , Honau and Karlsruhe .

history

From the foundation to the turn of the millennium

Oiltanking was founded in Hamburg in 1972. The company bundled the tank terminals that were previously part of Mabanaft's business. Existing terminals in Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Ghent went into the business assets through the new company. Two years later, Oiltanking began operations in Houston in the United States. In 1975 construction of the tank terminal in Amsterdam began . On the basis of legal regulations, Oiltanking took part in oil stocks in Germany from 1978 , and one year later in the oil stocks in the Netherlands. 1986 was the best year for Oiltanking's tank storage business to date. The turnover was 124 million DM , the income caught up with Mabanaft's mineral oil trading business this year. At that time, Oiltanking's global storage capacity was 3.2 million m³. In 1989 the construction of a large tank terminal in Singapore began.

In 1991 the company opened the first producer-independent tank farm in the new federal states in Gera . A year later, a tank terminal went into operation in Malta, construction of which began in 1990. In 1992, by expanding its international logistics network, Oiltanking had advanced to become the fourth largest tank storage specialist in the world. In 1993, Oiltanking bought the Hansa tank terminal in Duisburg and a mineral oil tank terminal in Annay-sous-Lens from Cepsa-France . At the turn of the year 1993/1994, the company was reorganized: Oiltanking was organized as an intermediate holding company responsible for all tank farm activities; the previous business in Germany has been combined in Oiltanking Deutschland GmbH . The acquisition of the majority stake in a tank farm near Buenos Aires in 1994. By the end of 1994 was made exceeded the total storage capacity worldwide to 5.6 million cubic meters, revenue in 1994 was 229 million DM. In 1996, Oiltanking a joint venture with the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and IBP Ltd. for the construction and operation of a tank farm in Mumbai. In 1999, Oiltanking founded a joint venture with Union Miniere Pirdop Copper JSCo to build a tank terminal in Varna, Bulgaria . In the same year, Oiltanking also acquired tank terminals in Kotka , Finland , in Tallinn and three other sites in Germany.

Development from 2000 to 2018

Between 1995 and 2000, Oiltanking's global capacity rose from around 6 million m³ to around 9.4 million m³, making the company the second largest independent tank terminal operator in the world. In 2001 it had 58 tank terminals in 15 countries. 2001 also saw the breakthrough in the chemical sector with the purchase of a chemical and oil tank farm in Antwerp , the construction of a new chemical tank farm in Singapore and the commissioning of the chemical tank farm in Varna. Together with other partners in the mineral oil industry, Oiltanking completed a 168 km pipeline from Brandsen (Buenos Aires) to Campana and a tank terminal in Argentina in 2002 . While the total storage capacity in 2002 was 9.7 million m³, in 2003 it totaled 10.2 million m³. At the end of 2003, Oiltanking operated 67 tank terminals in 17 countries. The company began building a tank terminal for chemicals and oil on China's Daya Bay east of Hong Kong in 2004. In the same year, the company also signed a contract with Star Energy Group Ltd. from Abu Dhabi via a stake in a tank terminal in the United Arab Emirates. In 2007, construction work began on a tank farm in Merak, Indonesia . In the same year the company acquired a tank terminal in Nanjing . The Vitória tank farm in Vila Velha , Brazil , started operations in 2008. In 2008, several parties, including Oiltanking, agreed a joint venture to build a tank terminal in Yeosu, South Korea . The nationalization program of the Bolivian 2,008 government also affected Oiltanking that much of the investment in tank farms and pipelines write off had. A joint venture between Oiltanking and Odfjell opened the following year, a tank farm in Suhar , the company also expanded its network of tank farms in the Colombian Cartagena and American Joliet and in Texas City. In 2009, Oiltanking owned and operated 68 tank terminals in 21 countries with a total capacity of 17 million m³.

In 2010, Oiltanking expanded its portfolio with bulk goods . In the summer of 2011 took place at the New York Stock Exchange , the successful partial IPO of Oiltanking Partners, LP , a US subsidiary based in Houston. In the following year, Oiltanking acquired a third facility in Singapore, the Helios tank terminal, and also took over a large bulk export terminal for coal and petroleum coke , the United Bulk Terminal near New Orleans . 2013 turned out to be the most successful year in the company's history to date. This was due to the improved results of almost all locations as well as the partial sale of the Helios tank terminal in Singapore, the participation in two tank terminals in Durban and Cape Town and the start of construction of a tank terminal on the Indonesian island of Karimun . The company also placed 2.6 million additional shares in Oiltanking Partners, LP on the stock exchange in 2013 , the issue price three times higher than that of 2011. In 2014, Oiltanking sold shares in the Merak tank terminal. In October 2014, Enterprise Products Partners Oiltankings acquired shares in Oiltanking Partners, LP and thus the warehouses in Houston and Beaumont . In 2015, Oiltanking acquired two chemical tank terminals in Finland from Vopak . In December 2015, the company also acquired a stake in Galana Mozambique and thus indirectly in two new tank storage projects in Matola and Beira . Singapore's port operator Jurong Port Pte Ltd. and Oiltanking also formed a joint venture in 2015. The aim was to build and operate a liquid cargo tank farm across from Jurong Island. In summer 2016, Oiltanking acquired 100 percent of Antwerp Gas Terminal NV . This company operates one of the largest independent tank terminals in Europe for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG ) and petrochemical gases. Oiltanking took over the tank terminal at Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport from Shell in 2016 . In April 2017, Oiltanking acquired the Galveston County terminal in Texas City, which specializes in chemicals. Oiltanking also put its new tank terminal in Matola, Mozambique, into operation at the end of 2017. At the beginning of 2018, Gasunie LNG Holding , Oiltanking and Vopak LNG Holding founded the joint venture German LNG Terminal GmbH . The purpose is to build, own and operate an import terminal for liquefied natural gas in northern Germany. In 2019, Olerex acquired the Oiltanking Tallinn terminal in Estonia.
