For Puerto Rico, instead of the reported Madeline de Jesús, who was injured in the long jump , her twin sister Margaret, who was not reported for the relay, ran. This inadmissible change initially went unnoticed, even by his own trainer. For this reason, the season did not appear in the finale despite qualifying. In the official result lists, Madeline de Jesús is usually still listed as the second runner, which is obviously incorrect and therefore corrected in the table below.

In the final on August 11, 1984 line-up changes were made in five teams.
- The US replaced Diane Dixon with Valerie Brisco-Hooks and Denean Howard with Chandra Cheeseborough.
- Canada put Molly Killingbeck on for Dana Wright.
- In the season of BR Germany, Ute Thimm and Heidi-Elke Gauge took the place of Christina Sussiek and Nicole Leistenschneider.
- In Jamaica, Cynthia Green ran for Andrea Thomas.
- Italy replaced Giuseppina Cirulli with Marisa Masullo.
The absence of the squadrons from the GDR and the Soviet Union made the US team a clear favorite.
In the first round in the final, however, led to the Canadians, who switched from the USA, the FR Germany and Great Britain. In the next two laps, the US runners worked their way forward and took the lead. At the last change, the USA was two and a half seconds ahead of Canada. Behind the Canadians there was a duel for the bronze medal between Great Britain and the Federal Republic of Germany. While the US relay won in a new Olympic record time and the Canadians won silver, the final runner Gaby Bußmann surprisingly managed to secure the bronze medal for the BR Germany relay ahead of Great Britain. The Jamaicans followed in fifth place, the Italians in sixth ahead of the Indians. The season from Puerto Rico did not start for the finale - see note on preroll 1 .
Valerie Brisco-Hooks won her third gold medal here in Los Angeles . This made her the most successful athlete in these games.
The relays of Canada and the Federal Republic of Germany won their first medals in this discipline.
