The Swiss Nicola Spirig tried several times to tear away from the group, but did not succeed. After cycling, Mari Rabie from South Africa was the first to go on the running track, but was quickly caught up and taken down by the American Gwen Jorgensen and Spirig. On the last lap, Jorgensen increased the pace, was able to break away from the Swiss and celebrate the Olympic victory.
