This article describes how to qualify for the table tennis competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics . A total of 172 athletes can take part. Each nation has a maximum of two athletes per gender in the individual competitions. In team competitions, each nation may only have one team per gender. In mixed doubles, only one doubles per nation can start.

The Japanese delegation is entitled to a quota place as the host nation in both the doubles and the two team competitions. Furthermore, Japan receives two places per gender in the individual competitions.

There are 16 quota places in each team competition. Each continent holds a qualifying tournament, whereby six teams are determined. Nine other teams qualify through a separate international qualifying tournament and Japan, as the host of the games, completes the field of participants.

In mixed doubles, too, six quota places are awarded via the continental qualifying tournaments. Four more will be played at the Grand Finals of the ITTF World Tour 2019 and five at the World Tour 2020. There is also a double from Japan in this competition.

For the individual competitions, each nation may register two athletes from the respective team competition (a total of 32 athletes per gender). 22 more qualify through continental qualifying tournaments. There is also the possibility of qualification via an international qualification tournament. In addition, the best placed athlete in the ITTF world rankings who has not yet qualified will receive a quota place.

Remarks

1)These tournaments were originally supposed to take place in April and May 2020, respectively. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , these tournaments have been postponed.
2)The number depends on how many quota places are allocated at the Pan American Games 2019 .
3)Since Germany had already achieved the maximum number of two quota places in the individual through the qualification in the team competition, the starting place fought for by Han Ying at the European Games 2019 was awarded to Ni Xialian .
