List of units of the tank destroyer troops of the army of the Bundeswehr

The list of units of the armored troops of the army of the German armed forces gives an overview of the units and formations of the armored troops existing until 2005 . In addition to the 33 units of the combat brigades, there were also a number of tank destroyer companies of the homeland security force and tank destroyer battalions for a certain period of time. Then there was the tank hunter training company and the tank hunter training centers. It was also planned to add a tank destroyer company to each of the three tank regiments of the corps troops that were no longer fully deployed. However, this only seems to have been achieved with the 1st Corps .

General

According to the plans for the establishment of the Bundeswehr , an anti-tank battalion was initially planned for each division . However, as early as the early 1960s, people began to assign an anti-tank company to each brigade instead . As a result, however, there were frequent transfers, reclassifications, renaming, dissolution and reorganization, so that the development of the various tank destroyer units is very difficult to understand.

The aim was to equip each of the 33 brigades of the field army (the three brigades of the airborne division were excluded here) and the two homeland security brigades 55 and 56 with a tank destroyer company. However, the former was not achieved. The systematic number sequence, as originally intended, could not be adhered to with the tank destroyers by additionally set up companies (PzJgKp 333 or PzJgKp 440), especially since a company transferred from one brigade to another sometimes received the number of the new brigade, but sometimes also Not. After reunification , the tank hunter companies were formed for the six new brigades with the serial numbers 37 to 42 that were newly established in East Germany.

According to the applicable regulations, each tank destroyer company should have the number of the assigned brigade with a zero attached. (PzBrig 14 = PzJgKp 140). However, due to the circumstances described in the previous paragraph, this was not always the case.

Then there were the reserve units of the homeland security force, which were present in not inconsiderable numbers and which, with a few exceptions (PzJgKp 741 at REFORGER 84 ), were never activated.

Finally, the tank destroyer platoons of the homeland security regiments must be mentioned, which were usually mobilized several times. (The vehicles remained mothballed, the existing training centers were used.)

In the airborne brigades, anti-tank anti-tank companies, also known as anti-aircraft anti-tank companies, were set up instead of armored personnel carriers to defend against enemy tanks. They were part of the paratrooper troops and, unlike the tank destroyer companies, did not have tracked armored vehicles. For these related units, which were only planned as independent companies for a short time, otherwise mostly part of the paratrooper companies, see the list of paratrooper associations of the Bundeswehr .
