Current version | 1.6.1.3 (as of June 04, 2020) |
Project Reality (PR) is a modification of the computer game Battlefield 2 , which from version 1.3 can also be played without Battlefield 2. The aim of the mod is to make combat scenarios as realistic and team-oriented as possible. Project Reality began as a mini-mod, which only influenced the properties of existing game elements. In the meantime, however, so many game mechanics, weapons, vehicles and sound recordings have been added that the remaining elements of the original game form a minority.
realism
The properties of all weapons and vehicles were, as far as this was possible within the framework of the engine, adapted to their real models. Military advisors from the armed forces of several nations also helped make the soldiers' ballistics and equipment more realistic. The damage caused by weapons has been adjusted and bleeding occurs after a severe hit, which must be treated.
Unrealistic game elements such as the health display, the displayed target crosshair, the display for the number of bullets in the weapon and notifications about hits and kills have been removed. All elements from Battlefield 2 that automatically mark the positions of enemy players on the map have also been removed.
VoIP communication
Project Reality includes a modified version of the Voice over IP software Mumble . Mumble is automatically started in the background when a game server is entered and enables linguistic communication in the game. There are several ways of communicating: Everyone can speak to everyone on their team in their immediate vicinity. The sound becomes correspondingly quieter with decreasing spatial distance. For example, a wounded player in the forest can call for help in the hope of being heard. The second communication channel is the so-called "Squadchat". All members (maximum 8) of a squad can communicate with each other, regardless of where they are in the game. In addition, squad leaders can speak with individual or all squad leaders and / or with the commander.
Game mechanics
Compared to Battlefield 2, the game mechanics have been changed significantly. In particular, the (re) entry into combat has been revised. Players cannot spawn on any flag occupied by their own team , and the leader of their own squad does not spawn . To compensate for this, there is the possibility of setting up outposts and assembly points that also serve as spawn points.
Special equipment can be requested after spawning and is given to a limited extent. Vehicles and air units require special equipment in order to be operated.
Examples
Access to equipment, so-called "kits", is limited. Since equipment is required for certain activities, a certain amount of squad and team organization is necessary in order to be able to take advantage of the various possibilities. For example, the crew of heavy vehicles must use "driver kits"; H. these players are only armed with one pistol. Also z. B. only one "Combat Engineer" per team available so that only one person can lay mines at the same time. As an incentive for team play z. For example, a minimum number of players in your own squad is required for the availability of some kits.
Many vehicles can only be used by several people at the same time. For example, manning the turret of a tank is only possible if a driver is available for the tank. Conversely, a tank without a gunner is tactically worthless and will i. d. Usually not tolerated on the battlefield.
The loss of some vehicles and aircraft is sometimes serious, because the team not only loses points, but it often takes a long time until the destroyed object is available to the team again (e.g. often 20 minutes after the loss of a combat helicopter / - jet or tank). Weapon systems are therefore only available to a limited extent and their loss can lead to sensitive disturbances of the game balance.
There is a sophisticated system for accessing many situational options in the game. The two so-called "main radio communication roses", or "COM rose" for short, are used for this purpose. Depending on the role and situation of the player, voice commands, visual markers on the map, equipment or structures can be requested, placed or removed. Most of the functionalities can also be used in two ways by context-sensitive pressing of the right or left mouse button.
Game modes
Assault and Secure (AAS)
The game mode "Assault and Secure" comes closest to the original conquest mode of Battlefield 2 and is next to the insurgency mode the most frequently played variant. Depending on the map scenario, all types of weapons are used. One or a few flags can be captured or defended at the same time in a fixed order. This is to simulate the course of the front. Captive flags of the opponent are slowly taken over when the own team has at least twice as many players in the vicinity (capping range) as the opponent. The team whose tickets were the first to drop to 0 loses, whereby the loss of soldiers' lives, vehicles, outposts and flags reduces the tickets of their own team. On most cards, the loss of all flags leads to the so-called "ticket bleed", i. H. the own tickets are quickly counted down to 0, unless the team takes a flag again. The Ticketbleed thus enables a quick end of rounds in which the opponent has achieved absolute card sovereignty.
Insurgency (INS)
The "Insurgency" game mode offers scenarios of asymmetric warfare . The aim of the game in the conventional army is to find a given number of local rebels' weapons depots and destroy them with heavy weapons or explosives, whereas the aim of the rebels, as in the AAS game mode, is to get the number of tickets given at the start of the game by destroying their equipment or Kill the enemy to bring it down to 0. As a special feature, insurgents can also walk around unarmed as civilians, whereby soldiers of the opposing party have the opportunity to arrest them with handcuffs and thus find out more quickly where the next weapons depot to be destroyed could be.
Command & Control (CNC)
Both player parties each build an outpost (so-called FOB). This must be kept at all costs, because if lost, your own party quickly loses tickets (so-called ticket bleed). The closer to the middle of the card this one outpost is set up, the higher the ticket bleed in the event of loss. This game mode is rarely played on public servers, presumably because a high level of team coordination is required to maintain game balance.
Skirmish
This game mode represents a kind of mini version of the AAS mode. Only a short infantry skirmish is played in a limited small map section. This scenario is popular when there are not too many players on a game server. It is therefore often used to attract other players (seeding) to the server in order to play bigger cards again after the short skirmish match.
Vehicle Warfare
This game mode is essentially limited to vehicle battles, often on land or in the air. Depending on the map, players can only play with equipment "kits" for pilot or driver. Sometimes there are tanks that, unlike other game modes, can be used by one person alone, who then plays the driver and gunner, as was already known from Battlefield 2, for example.
Co-Operative (COOP)
Most cards are also available in COOP versions. It is played against AI opponents. This mode is well suited, among other things, for the first steps in learning the game.
