rbbKultur is a radio station for Rundfunks Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb). Until May 6, 2019, the program was called Kulturradio .

history

The Kulturradio emerged in 2003 from Radio Kultur (formerly from the SFB ) and Radio 3 (formerly from the ORB ; the SFB was involved until 1999 and the NDR until 2001 ). The merger of the ORB and SFB to form the RBB led to the reduction to a cultural program for the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

While the former editor-in-chief and program director Wilhelm Matejka (today: Verena Keysers) and the former director Dagmar Reim regard the merger as a success, the change in the program structure met with ongoing protests from the audience. In addition to the program cuts, the incomplete broadcast of classical compositions is particularly criticized. This does not correspond to the "cultural mandate" of public radio broadcasting anchored in the constitution. In 2004 a listener initiative was founded (“Das GANZE Werk”) to oblige the two broadcasters NDR and RBB to “maintain cultural standards”.

The program's signature melody is a motif from the 3rd movement of Bach's 5th Brandenburg Concerto .

The Kulturradio is involved in two culture prizes : Together with the Literaturhaus Berlin , it awards the Walter Serner Prize . The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and has existed since the mid-1970s. Since 2017, Kulturradio has been awarding the Berlin Jazz Prize annually with the State of Berlin . The prize is endowed with 15,000 euros.

The program is linked to theaters, concert halls, festivals and museums in Berlin and Brandenburg through media partnerships. It broadcasts discussion rounds, broadcasts live from festivals and broadcasts concerts, for example from the Berlin Schaubühne , the radio philosophers in Berlin's Käthe Kollwitz Museum or the live broadcasts of concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic and recordings from the Brandenburg State Orchestra , the Berlin Jazz Festival or the music festival Potsdam Sanssouci .

At the end of April 2019 it was announced that the rbb will be bundling its cultural offerings under a single brand from May 6, 2019. The kulturradio changed its name to rbbKultur that day.
