The RFM Somnii is a music festival for electronic music (EMD, house, drum & bass, future bass and Hardstyle) in the Portuguese city of Figueira da Foz . It is also known as the Figueira da Foz Sunset Festival . On the city beach of Figueira da Foz, the Praia da Claridade (also Praia do Relógio), internationally known DJs perform and attract thousands of visitors. The festival begins in the afternoon and takes place during sunset until well into the night.
The festival is presented at the beginning of July each year by RFM , the youth broadcaster of the Catholic media group Renascença Comunicação Multimédia , of which Rádio Renascença is a member. The organizer is the Sociedade Lusa de Espetáculos (SLE), a company of the Portuguese Braver Media Group.
history
The festival was held for the first time in 2012. After around 25,000 visitors came in 2013, the festival had around 60,000 spectators in 2014 and reached 100,000 in 2016. In 2017 and 2018, 100,000 visitors came to the festival over three days.
In 2019 the festival entered a new phase. In addition to the main RFM Stage , a second stage has now opened with the Blitz / SIC Radical Stage . This stage is presented by the music newspaper BLITZ and by RFM Radical, the youth cable channel of the television broadcaster SIC , and offers mainly young DJs as well as bands of related music styles, reggaeton musicians and Portuguese hip-hop . In addition, the concept of the Festival City was introduced. In this parallel festival framework, musicians (jazz, punk rock, fado, classical), artists, dancers and dance groups performed free of charge at seven open venues in the city center of Figueira da Foz, and a DJ who was sponsored and awarded by technology dealers Competition introduced. In addition, on every festival day after the stage shows there were also after-show parties with DJs from the festival and other DJs in four different locations, namely the Casino Figueira , the NB Club next door in the former Casino Oceano , the square in front of the Forte de Santa Catarina at the Mondego estuary, and at the municipal campsite of Figueira da Foz (during the day).
In the same year, the organizers and the city administration of Figueira da Foz agreed on the further organization of the festival in the city until 2024, with the increased subsidies from the city administration, but also an expansion of the festival program.
In 2019, the organizers counted over 130,000 festival visitors over three days, together with all parallel events, the city counted around 200,000 visitors to the RFM Somnii and the parallel Festival City .
Finances
With the expansion of the festival in 2019, production costs totaled around 3 million euros. Compared to 2018, according to the organizer Grupo Braver, the proportion for musicians' fees has doubled and the other costs have increased by 40% compared to the previous year due to the greater production effort.
The main source of income for the organizers is the sale of tickets (2019: 29.50 euros), merchandise, drinks and food on the festival site, as well as public subsidies and sponsorship money.
After the organizers had agreed an annual grant of 20,000 euros with the Figueira da Foz city administration until 2020, both sides signed a new contract in 2019. This stipulates the continuation of the festival at the Figueira location until 2024 and an annual subsidy of 70,000 euros from the city's treasury, plus extensive logistical assistance from the city of several tens of thousands of euros. The city gave the organizer a further 90,000 euros in 2019 for the Festival City's parallel event concept with numerous events in downtown Figueira.
The festival also continues to receive a fixed grant of 50,000 euros from the state tourism agency Turismo de Portugal for the Centro region and free international advertising. The RFM Somnii is one of ten festivals advertised internationally by the Portuguese Tourism Agency.
