List of TV channels

RTL ZWEI (own spelling: RTLZWEI) is a German-language television channel operated by RTLZWEI Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG . RTL ZWEI (spelling until October 7, 2019: RTL II ) is a private television broadcaster with full programming in accordance with the State Broadcasting Treaty . Variants of the main program with nationally inserted advertising islands are produced for Austria and Switzerland ; these variants can be received via the cable networks in these two countries as well as via digital satellite. RTL ZWEI is the second branch of the RTL Group in Germany .

The company was founded in 1992 and, according to its own information, employs around 240 people, and Andreas Bartl has been the managing director since June 2014 . For the first time RTL ZWEI (at that time still under the old spelling RTL 2) recorded a profit in 1998. The 2003 profit amounted to 64.2 million euros. The gross advertising revenue has been over one billion euros since 2016 and was around 1.15 billion euros in 2018. The company is located south of Munich in the community of Grünwald , next to the Bavaria Film site ; only the newsroom is located in Cologne at infoNetwork, the news and magazine supplier of the RTL media group. The RTL ZWEI News , which the station broadcasts from Monday to Friday around 5 p.m. , is also produced there using the production technology of the Cologne-based company .

RTL ZWEI's own formats are created as commissioned productions by independent producers, for example Berlin - Tag & Nacht from Filmpool Film- und Fernsehproduktion or Der Trödeltrupp from Good Times Fernsehproduktions-GmbH . In addition to commissioned productions, RTL has ZWEI feature films and US series in its program.

Station logos

From 1999 the logo was slightly modified several times with the Roman two as the spelling (RTL II). On October 7, 2019, the station underwent a redesign . The Roman II was retained in the logo, but the spelling of the station changed from RTL II to RTL ZWEI in the course of the redesign. The slogan "SHOW ME MORE", which has been used as a claim since 2016, is also retained.

The corner logo has been in shades of gray and transparent edges since 1996. An exception to this is July 14, 2014 , when the logo was kept in the colors of the German flag , as recognition of the fourth world championship title of the German national football team at the 2014 World Cup . From midnight the R was black, the T was red and the L was yellow, for 24 hours. The circle with the two lines was still gray / transparent.

Slogans

1993 to 2009: "It's just fun"

2009 to 2014: "It's Fun"

since 2016: "SHOW ME MORE"

history

On March 6, 1993, RTL ZWEI (then as RTL 2) went on air at 6:09 a.m. with the feature film A lovely Fratz . This was preceded by a four-time postponement of the start of broadcast:

Initially, the first broadcast was scheduled for September 26, 1992, and the program schedules were already printed in the program guides. But the Hessian State Corporation for Private Broadcasting expressed concerns to the directors' conference of the state media authorities several times about the shareholder structure, and thus the granting of the license was refused until further notice. In addition, an entanglement with the namesake RTL (at that time still with the addition plus ) should be prevented, since the RTL owners, CLT , Bertelsmann , Burda and FAZ were also involved in RTL 2. In order to receive a broadcast permit, its shares had to be reduced below 25 percent and the CLT had to reduce the predominant influence in the RTL program advisory board.

Due to internal disagreements between Burda, the Tele München Gruppe , CLT and Bertelsmann - the latter two wanted to reserve an option for a later conversion into a feature film station in an additional contract - the necessary contracts could only be submitted to the Hessian media authority on February 9, 1993 become. In the meantime, other start dates, November 28, 1992 and January 23, 1993, had passed. Since January 22, 1993, a test image with the inscription “It’s going to start soon!” Has been activated via the Eutelsat II-F1 satellite at the orbital position 13 ° East.

Finally, after the shareholder relationships had been clarified, the broadcasting license was granted on March 1, 1993 at a special meeting of the general assembly. RTL 2 then went on air five days later with the motto "... is just fun!" On the former Astra satellite frequency of the sports channel , via Eutelsat and on cable - with the disadvantage that the program was initially not published in many magazines. At that time, the program could be received in around 40 percent of German households.

In June of the following year, RTL 2 moved from Cologne-Marsdorf to Munich, and in return the program was switched to terrestrial there.

In 1999 the name of the station changed from RTL 2 to RTL II . RTL II caused a sensation in 2000 with the first seasons of the reality show Big Brother and the talent show Popstars .

In September 2002, the satellite license for RTL II was extended to March 2008, also because the introduction of further news broadcasts increased the information content of the program and thus retained the character of a full program.

The broadcaster's media library, which was launched on RTL2.de in August 2011, was transferred to the newly established video-on-demand portal RTL II Now in February 2012 .

program

Children's program

The RTL II children's program at the time was the unofficial successor to Tele 5's Bim Bam Bino program , which was continued on Kabel 1 as Bim Bam Bino and on RTL II as Vampy. RTL II had the most extensive anime offering of all free-to-air German-language television channels. Anime initially came through Italian program packages in which American series were mixed with anime, because anime were always the highest rated of the mixed series. In 1999, the compilation of Pokémon , Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball was such a resounding success for RTL II that direct contact was made with Japanese companies and other series were added. Further ambitions were a separate station for such series as well as co-productions. These plans were rejected again. From 1993 to 2006 the majority of new anime series were shown, where the number ranged up to 70 series. From 2007 to 2013 there were just five new series. The decline in the anime program is justified by the fact that there is a stable regular audience with "excellent teenage ratings" and large fan groups, but that the new generation of children under 14 no longer reacts to anime and this market share of 50% has dropped to 15% and they tend to watch Super RTL and KIKA. The ratings for the advertising-relevant target group have always deteriorated, which has had an impact on the station average.

Pokito TV has been shown between programs since 2004 , a format for children that often revolves around anime , but also demonstrates leisure topics and sports in a very simple way. Pokito TV lasted between three and five minutes. The show was a further development of the earlier short magazines Vampy and Be , which were moderated by the eponymous rag dolls. The presentations by Pokito were emphasized "spontaneously", but almost all dialogues from adults to children had been discussed and formulated beforehand. This format was produced by Ananas TV & Film GmbH . From September 2008 to the end of 2009 the concept was changed a bit and renamed to My Pokito . This included an interactive live program every afternoon, which revolved around stars, games or trends. It was shown live on TV for about five minutes and then live on the web for another twenty minutes. The program was discontinued at the end of 2009 due to a declining rate. The afternoon program has since continued under the My Pokito label .

In February 2011, RTL II announced that it would give up the afternoon children's program from the end of April 2011 on every working day in favor of entertainment programs and sitcoms . At this point in time, RTL II was the last full program that still broadcast a children's program in the weekday afternoon programs. Since then, the children's program has been limited to a few anime television series on Sunday mornings. In February 2013, RTL II announced that the children's program broadcast on Sunday morning would end on April 21, 2013. A separate network channel for anime was launched in April. At www.rtl2anime.de it was possible to see anime series online.

Afternoon program

In the afternoon, RTL II broadcast comedy series and sitcoms on weekdays . Series with British humor such as Blackadder were also shown, and King of Queens and Immer wieder Jim were also on the program. There have been no new series on the program since 2007, the reason given was that the attractive sitcoms were all on Pro7 . On May 26, 2012 it was announced that the broadcaster would remove all sitcoms from the program on July 2, 2012 and concentrate on self-produced docu-soaps and reality formats. This program color shapes the RTL ZWEI program to this day.

Evening program

The evening before, RTL ZWEI broadcasts the soaps Köln 50667 and Berlin - Tag & Nacht on working days . The series Krass Schule - The Young Teachers has existed since 2018

Films are shown on Saturdays, and documentary soaps and magazines such as GRIP - Das Motormagazin are broadcast on Sundays .

evening programme

Self-produced documentary soaps such as Die Geissens - a terribly glamorous family and swap of women and the Wollnys - a terribly large family are particularly successful in prime time .

Among the most successful series of RTL II in the evening program were and still include various series that are imported from the USA . For example Game of Thrones , The Walking Dead , Marvel's Agents of SHIELD , 24 , Californication and Dexter . American series such as Autopsy - Mysterious Deaths and Flashpoint are also shown on night programs .

Another essential part of the evening and night program is the broadcast of feature films. In addition to a large number of American productions, RTL II established the broadcasting of Indian Bollywood productions on German television from 2004 .

In autumn 2015 a new game show with Simon Gosejohann called Fake Reaction! - one always deceives broadcast. In spring 2017, RTL II showed the license format Naked Attraction .

Own fictional television series

RTL II's first own fictional television series for prime time was the three-part crime series Gottlos - Why People Kill , which was broadcast in February 2016. In September 2016, the four-part crime drama series Neandertaler was broadcast. On September 11, 2017, RTL II broadcast a pilot of its third own fictional television series for Prime Time Call the Boys - 4 men for certain hours .

Germany premieres

RTL II was the first to introduce some broadcast formats from abroad on German television. Some of these broadcast formats (e.g. forensic medicine series) were later adopted by other broadcasters.

The premieres on RTL II include:

  • The Final Countdown : A millennium broadcast that lasted 24 hours and showed the celebrations in various locations around the world.
  • Popstars was the first casting show on German television in 2000.
  • Jack Point Jack was the first interactive feature film on German television.
  • The new television makers : laypeople suggested concepts for new television programs. One episode of each of the eight best was shot. The best show What happens if ...? was broadcast in three episodes on public television.
  • Bollywood films: On November 19, 2004, RTL II broadcast In good as in difficult days (original title: Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ), the first dubbed Bollywood film on German television and achieved an audience rating of over 12.3% in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds. Because of its great success, Indian films have been broadcast again and again since then. Before that, there were Bollywood films in Hindi with German subtitles on the channels ARTE and VOX .

Complaints about the program

The Hessian State Authority for Private Broadcasting, which is responsible for the broadcasting license for RTL II, has objected to various RTL II programs. In 2000, the broadcast of pornographic films was objected to. A 1999 on the show Peep! Broadcast "Interview" with a rubber doll, which represented the then Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , was criticized as defamatory.

At the end of 2004, the station was charged with illegally broadcasting advertisements during children's programs. The way in which anime is broadcast in the RTL II program has often been criticized by fans. The criticism relates to the airtime, the editing and the dialogue books. The first criticism came from Dragonball . The series was partly cut and broadcast synchronized with alienated meaning, so in the German version the opponents shoot with rubber bullets instead of live ammunition and "slippery" jokes are not translated as such. RTL II is accused of not having acted for educational reasons, but in order not to upset the parents of the viewers and thus not to endanger the quota. Were there any efforts by RTL II to act according to the wishes of the fans by z. For example, when Dragonball used the Manga template for translation instead of the French template, the fans were no longer addressed in this way later. RTL II did not process various series in accordance with youth protection measures, in some cases programs were processed for broadcast despite the availability of daily approvals. In addition, RTL II was the only licensee in Europe who commissioned extensive censorship in image and dialogue in the 21st century ( Naruto ) and also omitted episodes ( Dragon Ball GT ). The fansite Animedigital.de describes RTL2's actions as pure “actionism”.

For the program Nutella - The Birthday Show, broadcast by RTL II in mid-2005 , the broadcaster had to pay a fine of 45,000 euros for illegal surreptitious advertising. Surreptitious advertising was also found on the Big Brother show . The media guards had already dealt with the broadcast of the program in advance, but came to the conclusion, despite considerable reservations, that respect for human dignity would be preserved in the program.

The station has been increasingly criticized in the media since 2009 at the latest because of the quality and authenticity of its self-produced documentation formats. After the majority of the new formats launched as part of a “program offensive” in 2010 failed both critics and audiences, the entertainment director Julia Nicolas was fired in August 2010. In a press release, the broadcaster itself made a direct connection to a “measure for more program quality”. The broadcaster stated that new formats would go through a “standardized evaluation process” in the future, and that the marketer of the broadcaster El Cartel should “be more involved in the implementation of the new goals”. During the program Tatort Internet - Finally protect our children , a legal check was carried out in October 2010 to determine whether program principles, personal rights and youth protection regulations were being observed.

The program X-Diaries violated the protection of minors 37 times within three months in 2011.
