The Saarland football team was the team of the Saarland Football Association (SFB) from 1950 to 1956, as the then autonomous Saarland was an independent member of the world football association FIFA at that time . The Saarland NOK , which achieved participation in the 1952 Summer Olympics , was comparable .
history
The team played 19 international matches. Among other things, Saarland met the German national team in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup . The first game was lost in Stuttgart 3-0, in the second leg they lost 3-1 at Ludwigsparkstadion in Saarbrücken , but in the group they were able to hold their own thanks to an away win in Oslo as second ahead of Norway.
Saarland won six of the international matches, three ended in a draw and ten were lost. The preparatory game of the reigning world champions Uruguay shortly before the World Cup on June 5, 1954, which the defending champions won 7-1 in Saarbrücken, could be the highlight . Soon afterwards, Saarlanders were eligible to play for the team of the new world champions, as the association, which was renamed the Saarland Football Association (SFV) on July 8, 1956 , joined the DFB in 1957 .

The qualification began with a bang: In Oslo , Saarland were 2-0 down after a good quarter of an hour and practically only played ten (the only permitted substitution was made by then coach Helmut Schön after five minutes due to an injury, and in the 10th Theo Puff broke his fibula in a minute, but stayed on the grass). Above all, French professional Kurt Clemens tirelessly cranked up the game of his team, in the end he and his colleagues had turned the game and won 3-2.
