San Andrés (Spanish Isla de San Andrés ) is an island that belongs to the national territory of Colombia and whose city of the same name is the capital of the Department of San Andrés and Providencia . The island is located in the Caribbean Sea around 770 km northwest of the Colombian coast, but only 190 km east of the coast of Nicaragua . It is about 90 km away from the neighboring island of Providencia .

The island of San Andrés is located in the archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia, which extends over 349,800 km². The island was most likely discovered before 1527, as it was already listed on maps from that year. The island is characterized by a mountain range that stretches from north to south, is 55 meters above sea level at its highest point and is largely covered with forests of coconut palms . There are only a few places where there is a sandy beach, the shore area consists mainly of rugged volcanic rock.

The municipality ( municipio ) San Andrés has 73,850 inhabitants, the capital of the island of the same name (cabecera municipal) has 54,634 inhabitants (as of 2016).

San Andrés is mainly visited by Colombian tourists who can shop duty-free in the free trade zone .
