San Bernardino is a city in San Bernardino County in the US state of California , United States , with a population of 209,961 (last census 2010) and the seat of the county administration. It is located in the eastern San Bernardino Valley at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains . The urban area has a size of 153.5 km².

The city is the seat of California State University, San Bernardino and the diocese of San Bernardino .

history

San Bernardino's story begins in the early years of the 19th century. Spanish missionaries were the first to settle in this region. They chose the fertile valley at the foot of the majestic mountain range as an outpost for other missionaries. It is said that Father Francisco Dumetz came across the San Bernadino Valley on his last missionary trip from San Gabriel and, with great effort, erected an altar for the Indians living there on May 20, 1810. Padre Dumetz named the area "San Bernadino" after the Italian saint Bernadino / Bernhardin .

In 1940 the first McDonald’s restaurant opened in San Bernardino. Glen Bell , founder of Taco Bell, opened his first store here in 1954.

In 1982 the open-air stage San Manuel Amphitheater was built.

In 1989 a serious train accident occurred in San Bernardino, in which the overloaded freight train 7551 of the Southern Pacific Railroad derailed, killing four people and injuring another four. During the clean-up work, the Calnev pipeline running under the accident site was damaged without this being noticed. The weakening led to a leak 13 days after the railway accident. When the leaking fuel ignited, two more people were killed and eleven houses destroyed. Today, houses are no longer allowed to be built near the tracks.

On June 11, 2012 San Bernardino declared insolvency and filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code. The city was expecting a deficit of $ 45 million for the current fiscal year. Mistakes in bookkeeping, increasing spending on investments, interest on debt and social benefits, coupled with stagnating income, had led to financial difficulties. In the previous four years, the number of employees had already been reduced by 20 percent. On May 30, 2015 it was announced that the proceedings would be terminated within one year. On December 6, 2016, the Meredith bankruptcy court confirmed the bankruptcy exit plan.

On December 2, 2015, there was a shooting in the local Inland Regional Center with 14 dead and 21 injured, which is classified as an act of terrorism by the investigative authorities.

In 1970 the English band Christie dedicated the world hit San Bernardino to the city.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the population was 19.0 percent white and 15.0 percent African-American; 4.0 percent were of Asian origin. 66.0 percent of the population were Hispanics . The median income per household in 2015 was 39,097 US dollars . 30.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, making San Bernardino one of the poorest cities in California.

Today the San Bernardino International Airport ( IATA code : SBD) is located on the site of the Norton Air Force Base , which operated from 1942 to 1994 .

The San Bernardino Santa Fe Depot station is served by Amtrak and Metrolink lines. The San Bernardino Downtown station is the end of two Metrolink lines and the future Arrow SPNV connection to Redlands . There is also at the center of which is the 2010 opened years Bus Station ( english Transit Center ).
