The 1972/73 season was the 29th season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . Leksands IF became champions for the second time in the club's history . Skellefteå AIK and KB Karlskoga relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the eight teams per group played a total of 14 games. The four best-placed teams in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The last four in each group had to compete in a relegation round, with both groups conducting their own relegation round. The last placed in each relegation round relegated directly to the second division, while the penultimate of each relegation round had to compete in the relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
