Slaven Bilić [ ˈslaʋɛn ˈbiːlitɕ ] (born September 11, 1968 in Split ) is a former Croatian football player and today's coach .

Player career

society

In 1987 Bilić moved up to the professional squad of Hajduk Split . In order to get match practice, the defensive player was loaned to NK Primorac in the winter of 1929 . The following season, the Hajduk officials gave him on loan for the 1988/89 season to HNK Šibenik . After his return to Hajduk Split, the defender played in the starting line-up. In 1992 he won his first national title with the Croatian championship.

Karlsruher SC

In the summer of 1993 he moved to the German Bundesliga for Karlsruher SC . Under coach Winfried Schäfer he had the most moving sporting time of his career here. He scored a total of five goals in the 1993 to 1996 seasons - but was also sent three off - and qualified twice with the KSC for the UEFA Cup competition. He was part of the KSC team that won the UEFA Cup in 1993/94 . a. beat Valencia 7-0 , in which Bilić headed the last goal and advanced to the semi-finals. In 1995 Bilić won the DFB Indoor Masters with the KSC.

West Ham United and Everton FC

During the winter break of the 1995/96 season, the defensive player was transferred to West Ham United in the English Premier League . There he completed 13 games in the rest of the season. In the 1996/97 season he scored two goals in 35 games. On July 16, 1997, he moved to league rivals Everton FC .

In 2000, he ended his career where it began when he signed with Hajduk Split . In his last year as a professional, he played nine games and won the championship again.

National team

Bilić played 44 times for the Croatian national team, for which he scored three goals. He was in the Croatian World Cup line-up for the 1998 World Cup , where he also celebrated his greatest success as a national player with third place.

Bilić stood out in his active time as a defender mainly through his headball strength.

Coaching career

Between 2004 and 2006 Bilić coached the Croatian U-21 team. The trade magazine World Soccer named Bilić the world's best youth coach of 2006 for his work . In 2007 he was named the second best national coach in the world by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

National coach Croatia

From 2006 to 2012 he was the coach of Croatia's senior national team . He brought this to the final round of the European Football Championship in 2008 and made it to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Switzerland and Austria. There, the team lost 3-1 on penalties against Turkey . His team did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. At the European Football Championship in 2012 , Croatia eliminated in the group stage behind the eventual finalists Spain and Italy .

Trainer in Russia and Turkey

Lokomotiv Moscow signed Bilić as the new head coach for the 2012/13 season . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015 and started his job after the 2012 European Football Championship . He took over the team from José Couceiro , whose contract was not renewed.

On June 26, 2013, after only one season in Moscow, Bilić dissolved his contract and moved to the Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul .

West Ham United

On June 9, 2015, Bilić signed a contract as head coach at West Ham United , returning to his former club. In his first season, he led the club to seventh place in the Premier League and thus to participation in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League . In the season 2016/17 the team finished 11th place when the club first time in the London stage his home ground had. After only two wins from the first eleven league games, the team was third from bottom of the table in the 2017/18 season and the club officials decided to dismiss Bilić.

Ittihad and return to England.

In October 2018 he became the coach of the Saudi Arabian first division club Ittihad and was given a contract until 2021. However, he was released on February 25, 2019 after his team had only won three out of a total of 17 games. In June 2019 he was introduced as the new coach of the English second division club West Bromwich Albion .

Bilić found himself exposed to severe criticism after he faked a kick in the chest against Christian Ziege, who was lying on the ground, during the already “brutal” (quote from Berti Vogt ) quarter-final match of the 1996 European Championship against Germany . Although the referee stood by, Bilić did not have to leave the field.

On February 13, 2008, Bilić was appointed UNICEF ambassador . Bilić is the first Croatian athlete to receive this honor. In the justification of the Children's Fund , it is said that Bilić has been acting as an advocate for children's rights for years.

Bilić speaks Croatian, German, Italian and English and completed a five-year law degree in 1993 . He is divorced and has a son and a daughter. Bilić is the guitarist in the rock band Rawbau , which also presented an official fan song before Euro 2008.
