Terminator: Genisys (original title: Terminator Genisys ) is an American science fiction film by the director Alan Taylor , which was released on July 1, 2015 in the United States and was released on July 9, 2015 in German-speaking countries. The world premiere of Terminator: Genisys took place on June 21, 2015 in Berlin. The plot of the fifth part of the Terminator series takes place in different time periods between 1984 and 2029. However, the historical events and thus the entire framework of the Terminator universe run - starting with a journey back in time to 1973, which has not been mentioned in any previous film - different than in the previous films. Terminator: Genisys thus offers an alternative timeline to the storylines in Terminator (1984), Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines (2003) and Terminator: Redemption (2009). Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier were responsible for the script.

Like the fourth part of the Terminator series, Terminator: Genisys was planned as a reboot and prelude to a new trilogy.

action

2029

After a long war between the human resistance of the remaining remnants of mankind, led by John Connor, and the machines in the form of the artificial intelligence Skynet, mankind is on the verge of ultimate victory over the machines. In a coordinated attack, Skynet's central core in Colorado and a time machine built by Skynet in a secret Skynet bunker in Los Angeles are to be destroyed at the same time in order to prevent Skynet from inserting a killer robot - a so-called Terminator - into it to prevent Connor's birth Year 1984 sends, as John Connor could see from the records of his mother Sarah Connor. Skynet recognizes the threatening situation and, shortly before its military defeat, uses the time machine to send a Terminator T-800 to 1984 to murder Sarah Connor before she can give birth to her son John. Only seconds later, Skynet's central core in Colorado is destroyed by human resistance and all terminators and machines switch off immediately. However, John Connor and his people have to realize that they are late and Skynet has already sent a terminator back in time. It is decided to send a soldier of the resistance to 1984 to protect Connor's mother from the Terminator. Kyle Reese, from whom Connor knows from his mother's notes, that he is or will be his father and that he has to send him into the past so that he can himself be removed from Reese and his mother in 1984, also volunteers can be conceived in the first place. Just as Reese starts his journey through time, he experiences briefly how John Connor is attacked by a previously unknown Terminator model (T-5000). During the time travel, Kyle sees himself as a child in an alternate timeline in which Reckoning never took place and in which he receives a Genisys as a birthday present in the peaceful year 2017 . At the same time, however, he hears his alternate self say that Genisys is Skynet and that as soon as Genisys goes online, billing day would begin. Kyle could "kill" Skynet before it was born.

1984

Both the T-800 and Kyle Reese arrive as in the first Terminator film in 1984. When the T-800 tries to seize the clothing of some punks , another T-800 appears to fight the time-traveling T-800 until it is finally destroyed with a targeted shot from a large-caliber , armor-piercing weapon. Kyle Reese, however, unexpectedly meets an unfamiliar terminator from a liquid metal - alloy existing T-1000 model and is desperately trying to escape from this. He is finally rescued by an unexpectedly self-confident Sarah Connor, who is supported by the previously seen T-800, which she calls "Pops" (in English: "Pops") and who was also the one who sent the T-800 sent back by Skynet -800 destroyed with the shot. Sarah reports that Paps has been by her side since 1973, when a T-1000 murdered her parents and that she has developed a fatherly relationship with Paps. To Reese's amazement, Sarah Connor already knows about everything: About the upcoming reckoning day in 1997, about the T-800 that Skynet sent back in time, even about the T-1000 and that she and Kyle have to beget her future son John . Reese does not find out about the latter at first, but Pop's Sarah repeatedly insensitively urges her to pair with Reese. She and Pop even manage to lure the T-1000, for the arrival of which they have been preparing for years, into a trap and destroy it in an acid shower. Sarah Connor and Paps present Reese a self-made time machine, but to control it they need the main processor of a T-800, which they take from the destroyed T-800 that Skynet had sent from 2029. Sarah Connor wants to travel to 1997 with Kyle Reese to prevent reckoning. But Reese knows from the memory of his parallel self during the time travel to report that according to his vision, the day of reckoning has been postponed to 2017. Paps explains that Reese's vision stems from the fact that it is possible, under certain circumstances, to experience memories from alternative timelines while traveling through time. Sarah Connor finally agrees to travel to 2017 with Reese. Paps, on the other hand, is forced to wait 33 years for the arrival of Sarah Connor and Reese in 2017, because its organic components have partially dissolved due to the acid rain in the fight with the T-1000 and it is without a complete organic coating that regenerates needed many years that time machine cannot use.

2017

Arrived in 2017, Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese end up naked on a highway and are arrested by the police before Paps can contact them after 33 years of waiting. A little later, to their utter confusion, the two meet the adult John Connor in a hospital. He tells them that he too traveled back in time with the help of the time machine from 2029. Despite their caution, Sarah and Reese, who has now found out that he is actually John Connor's father, want to trust John before Dad arrives and attacks John Connor. Due to its regeneration abilities, it turns out that John Connor is no longer human, but that he has been transformed by Skynet into a completely new Terminator model, a T-3000. In 2029, just before the destruction of its central core, Skynet had transferred its consciousness to an even more advanced model - a T-5000. At the moment when Reese started his time travel from the year 2029 into the past, this T-5000, directly controlled by Skynet, had attacked Connor and, with the help of nanotechnology , transformed him into the T-3000 by converting Connor's body cells at a molecular level now only carries out Skynet's will. John Connor as a human no longer exists. However, the T-3000 still has Connor's full memories and is also able to perfectly simulate his emotions and personality. Immediately afterwards, Skynet sent the T-3000, which was developed from John Connor, to 2014 with the help of the time machine from 2029, where it should now realize a new possibility to create Skynet after preventing the original day of reckoning (1997). The T-3000 has been posing as a human since its arrival in 2014 and, with its technological knowledge from the future, ensured that at Cyberdyne Systems, under the direction of Miles and Danny Dyson, the foundations for Skynets were laid without the knowledge of the people involved Emergence and its takeover could be developed. Both the development of Skynet's artificial intelligence itself and the development of the time machine and the development of the liquid metal alloy that make up the T-1000 models have been decisively advanced in this way, but are not yet complete. The time machine is not yet ready and would destroy or destroy everything that is in it if you used it. The liquid metal alloy cannot yet be used to create Model 1000 terminators because the main processor that controls all of the terminators does not yet exist.

The T-3000 is now trying in vain in 2017 to convince Reese and Sarah Connor to help him create Skynet. Sarah Connor, Reese and Paps escape. The only weak point in the T-3000 turns out to be strong magnetic fields . Ultimately, Paps can force himself and the T-3000 into the time machine, with the aim of activating himself, the T-3000 and the entire Cyberdyne Systems building complex in which the Genisys / Skynet data center is located to destroy. The T-3000 is finally destroyed in the time machine as planned by Paps. Paps, who is ready to sacrifice himself, is thrown out of the time machine by luck during the fight with the T-3000 and ends up - almost completely destroyed - shortly before the time machine explodes in a small lake of the liquid metal alloy. Shortly before the entire building complex exploded, Reese and Sarah Connor were able to get to safety in a bunker in the Cyberdyne Systems basement. A few minutes after the explosion, a T-1000 appears to break into the bunker, but it turns out to be the surviving Pope. When it was thrown into the liquid metal alloy, its main processor came into contact with the alloy and was able to replace its original mechanical body with a body made from the liquid metal alloy, which it can now control with the help of its main processor. Paps has evolved from a T-800 model to a T-1000. Sarah and Kyle are confident that they have destroyed Skynet and no longer have a duty to come together to save the world by conceiving a child. Nevertheless, they fell in love and become a couple.

A post-credit scene shows that Skynet survived the explosion and that its core is still working.

background

After the world premiere of the film at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on June 14, 2015, the film's premiere for Europe took place on June 21, 2015 at the Sony Center in Berlin ; the main actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was always present. The film was shown in Mexico , Colombia , Peru , Singapore and some Scandinavian countries from June 25th and 26th, 2015. Two weeks after its theatrical release in North America, Terminator: Genisys had brought in production costs of 155 million US dollars.

Terminator: Genisys was the first film in the Terminator series to be given the FSK 12 rating and thus the lowest age rating in the Terminator franchise to date.

For the first time, Skynet is shown as a hologram in the film series. Skynet was played by Ian Etheridge, Nolan Gross, Seth Meriwether and Matt Smith, depending on their age.

The fifth part of the Terminator film series should help the franchise regain its old fame, because Terminator: Genisys was planned by the Paramount film studio as the start of a new trilogy, the second part of which should come to cinemas in 2017 and the last part in 2018. However, Terminator: Genisys evolved into a bubble movie , a film whose earnings, according to The Hollywood Reporter, on the one hand are insufficient to decide on a sequel at a certain point in time, which the producers on the other hand cannot give up because the parts of the future The box office results of the prequel are not foreseeable. The film had a moderate grossing of around $ 278 million four weeks after it opened in theaters, causing Paramount to question the sequels and a planned TV series. However, to make a final decision, the studios still had to wait for the box office results in China, which is now the second largest cinema market in the world, where the film was released on August 23, 2015. The unexpected success after its theatrical release in China made a sequel to the film within reach, but in October 2015 it was announced that the plans for a new Terminator trilogy had been put on hold for an indefinite period.

Gross profit

Terminator: Genisys launched nationwide in US cinemas on July 1, 2015, before Independence Day weekend, grossing $ 8.9 million on the first day. In China, the film grossed $ 27.4 million on its first day of cinema, making it the fourth-best Chinese release ever for a Hollywood film.

The worldwide box office result was around 440 million US dollars. Terminator: Genisys became the first US film to gross over $ 400 million worldwide, but less than $ 100 million in the US and Canada themselves. In addition, Terminator: Genisys is the second most successful film in the series in terms of worldwide box office income, after Terminator 2 - Settlement Day .

The first film in the Terminator franchise, which was re-cast with Schwarzenegger after a twelve-year hiatus, failed to convince the critics like Terminator (1984) or Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day (1991). It was received with mixed feelings, similar to Terminator 3 - Rebellion of the Machines (2003) or Terminator: The Redemption (2009). Despite a low FSK rating (PG-13 for the second time in the United States) and the conception of a summer blockbuster, the film was able to make a profit in the United States with gross profits of US $ 27.3 million in the three days after its theatrical release to prevail against Magic Mike XXL , but was just behind Jurassic World and Everything is upside down , which had already topped the ranking in the previous weeks.

Jan Küveler judged in the Welt am Sonntag :

“After all, nobody has been waiting for the nonsense afterwards, with parallel universes and school buses hanging indecisively on the Golden Gate Bridge like half-baked film ideas. The script is so stupid that you look forward to the moment when the evil Skynet artificial intelligence takes over and exterminates humanity. "

In the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , Oliver Kaever wrote:

Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day was more than perfect popcorn cinema in 1991. The film became part of the popular culture discourse. Whoever wanted to have a say must have seen him. The fifth infusion of James Cameron's 1984 original is far from such a significance. The utilization logic has converted the material into a money machine. [...] Terminator too : Genisys will make money, a lot of money. However, this machine does not produce relevance or even fun and good entertainment. "

Kai Mihm wrote in the film magazine epd Film :

“Where James Cameron sparked existentialist sparks with a few tweaks in the original films, the new film gets lost in a story whose emphasized cleverness only seems overcomplicated in the long run. Instead of overwinding the whole air act in a playful and playful manner, the film freezes in a pseudo-scientific plausibility hype [...] Conversely, director Alan Taylor quickly reaches his limits when it comes to visual narration. One waits in vain for iconographic images or even just a certain elegance. Once again, the 3D images prove to be an additional handicap, with their soupy texture, the lack of depth of field and the annoying halo effects . […] Seen in this way, »Terminator: Genisys« works very well, especially on a meta level: As a reminder of what a masterful director James Cameron was and what kind of visionless commissioned filmmakers should inherit him. "

At the 2015 Teen Choice Awards , Emilia Clarke received a Summer Movie Star nomination . As part of the ceremonies of the Jupiter Awards 2016 Clarke as Best International Actress nomination. Others

Terminator: Genisys is the first film in the Terminator series in twelve years in which Arnold Schwarzenegger slips back into the role of the Terminator, which is again the model of the first two films, the T-800 . That this Terminator embodied by Schwarzenegger is significantly older than the one from 1984 was explained by James Cameron by the fact that the human tissue on the metal skeleton of the androids ages. The young Terminator from 1984 is essentially computer-generated, the face was generated by performance capture recordings with Schwarzenegger.

Continuation of the series

In October 2015, producer Dana Goldberg assured that sequels of Terminator: Genisys were still planned, but that the planned start date had been postponed in view of the box office results, which had been very different in the USA and internationally, in order to focus on market research primarily in Europe and Asia regarding the future development of the series. In March 2016, lead actor Schwarzenegger defended the film against rumors that there would be no sequel. Although Studio Paramount had canceled the planned film launch of May 2017 for the first sequel Terminator: Genisys 2 , the studio kept the film launch of June 2018 for the third part Terminator: Genisys 3 , and after Schwarzenegger's announcement in March 2016, Paramount continued the Status of the second part of “on hold” (which expressed that the studio would only decide in the future whether a sequel would be shot) back to the more optimistic “TBA (to be announced)” (“start date is coming”). In April 2016, Emilia Clarke stated that she would no longer star as Sarah Connor in upcoming sequels to the series. In January 2017 it was announced that James Cameron wanted to continue the Terminator series either as a producer or director after Terminator: Genisys with another film, which would also be produced by Skydance again and whose screenplay would probably be written by Tim Miller . Since Cameron only got the rights to the series of films he started back in 2019, it was unlikely that the film would be shot before then. In May 2017, Arnold Schwarzenegger said at the Cannes Film Festival that he would be there for the sequel. In September 2017 it was announced that Tim Miller would direct the sixth part of the film series , but it would be a sequel to Terminator 2 - Judgment Day , which would therefore ignore all subsequent films.
