occupation

This is the end (original title: This Is the End ) is an American fantasy - comedy . It is based on the short film Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse , which Jason Stone, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made in 2007. The main characters in the film are Seth Rogen , James Franco , Jonah Hill , Jay Baruchel , Danny McBride and Craig Robinson , who play themselves in fictional roles.

action

Jay Baruchel travels to Los Angeles to visit his old friend and fellow actor Seth Rogen . Rogen persuades Baruchel to go to James Franco's party, which includes Aziz Ansari , Michael Cera , Evan Goldberg , Kevin Hart , Jonah Hill , Mindy Kaling , David Krumholtz , Danny McBride , Christopher Mintz-Plasse , Jason Segel , Rihanna , Craig Robinson , Paul Rudd , Martin Starr , Channing Tatum and Emma Watson . Seth and Jonah try to include Jay in the group, but Jay doesn't really feel comfortable. He goes to a nearby store with Rogen to buy cigarettes.

Suddenly the earth shook in the shop and some people were drawn upwards by a beam of blue light, while others perished as a result of the forces of nature. Rogen and Baruchel run frightened out of the store and through a mass chaos back to Franco's party, where no one noticed anything of the chaos. When an earthquake shakes Franco's house, the guests panic and run outside to see the burning Hollywood Hills . Suddenly a huge abyss opens up in the earth, and the majority of the party guests fall into it or die in the mass panic. Rogen, Baruchel, Franco, Hill and Robinson hide in the house to wait there until rescue arrives.

The next morning, Danny McBride, who snuck into the party uninvited, is the first to wake up. He didn’t notice what happened and is preparing a sumptuous breakfast from most of the food. He considers the stories of the others to be a joke until a strange man asks for help, but his head is cut off. The group passes the time with drugs and a self-made film. There are always conflicts within the group and the friendship between Baruchel and Rogen is also shaken. In contrast to the others, Baruchel thinks that the events outside are the biblical apocalypse.

Emma Watson accidentally breaks into the supposedly abandoned house. The group picks her up and offers her a place to sleep to rest. A discussion of the group that takes place in front of their room, Watson mistakenly believes that it was a planned rape, whereupon she threatens the men with her ax. She forces the others to let her have the water and flees.

When the water runs out, the actors draw a drawing to see who goes around the house to get new ones from the basement. Robinson loses out, but comes back empty-handed as the cellar door jams and a monster attacks him. Eventually they dig their way through the ground and get to the canisters in the basement. But McBride wastes most of it, so the others throw him out of the house.

In the evening Jonah prays to God that he will let Jay die because Jay does not fit into the group. However, during the night he is raped by a demon and is now possessed by it. The other friends can overwhelm him and tie him to bed.

Robinson tells Jay about the monster and that he is now also assuming an apocalypse. When the food runs out, they search the neighboring house. There a demonic monster attacks the two. Robinson and Baruchel narrowly escape and return to Franco's house. Together they try to exorcise Hill, who is possessed by a demon. First Hill and then the house catch fire, so the group has to leave. Outside they are attacked by a huge demon. Robinson wants to sacrifice himself for the group so that the others can escape. Unexpectedly, however, he is saved by a beam of blue light from the sky. The rest of the group flees, but meets McBride, who now leads a horde of cannibals. Now Franco wants to sacrifice himself so that he, like Robinson, can go to heaven. The plan works and a beam of light pulls Franco up. But when he scorns the cannibals, the light goes out and the cannibals eat him alive.

Rogen and Baruchel escape the cannibals, but immediately encounter a gigantic demon. With death in sight, they affirm their friendship. As a result, a blue beam of light appears over Baruchel and tears it into the sky, and Rogen holds on to it. Halfway through, the power of the ray does not seem to be enough for both of them and they threaten to fall into the demon's jaws. Rogen lets go, otherwise both of them would die. For this victim a blue ray of light appears for him too.

In heaven the two meet again Robinson, who is now an angel. He explains to them that every wish will come true in Paradise. While Seth wants a Segway , Baruchel does the same with the Backstreet Boys . The film ends with a heavenly party where the band sings the song Everybody (Backstreet's Back) .

production

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg announced on Reddit that they have always wanted to make a movie where actors play themselves and something extraordinary happens. The film is also based on the short film Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse , which was made in 2007 by Jason Stone, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

In an interview with the Guardian , Evan Goldberg (writer and co-director) says that Being John Malkovich was a huge influence on the film. He and Seth Rogen are also big fans of the Larry Sanders Show , in which celebrities also often play themselves.

During production the film was called The Apocalypse , later it was renamed The End of the World as 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the title "The Apocalypse". In December 2012, Seth Rogen announced via Twitter that The End of The World had finally been renamed This is the End .

Reviews

Michael Kienzl writes on critic.de that the film “doesn't want to be more than a silly party movie”, which is “at the same time an over-the-top celebrity soap opera with well-lubricated situational comedy, a splatter festival and a tribute to the lowlands of American pop culture”. Especially his “adolescent anarchic charm” makes him sympathetic to the audience.

On Serienjunkies.de , Thomas Zimmer highlights the banality that can hardly be surpassed. But "the chemistry between the actors [...] fits so well that the insignificance [...] turns into an actual joke." In terms of comedic timing, the troupe has "colleagues like Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Co. [...] miles away suspended ".
