The 19th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 22nd led over 109.5 kilometers from Modane Valfréjus to L'Alpe d'Huez . On this high mountain stage there was a sprint classification and three mountain classifications , including two of the Hors Catégorie and one of the 1st category. The Col du Galibier was approached again via the Col du Télégraphe ( 1566  m ) , but this time the race was led through the tunnel, which was reopened in 2002 at an altitude of 2556  m , and the actual pass height was not used. This short stage ended in L'Alpe d'Huez at an altitude of 1850  m . This was the fourth and last mountain finish of this Tour de France. 168 of the 198 registered drivers were still at the start.

Race course

Immediately after the start, Johnny Hoogerland attacked , accompanied by Pablo Urtasun , Marcus Burghardt and Mickaël Buffaz . Shortly afterwards, the group was caught up by a ten-man chase group, consisting of Gorka Izagirre , André Greipel , Maxim Iglinski , Rui Costa , José Iván Gutiérrez , Kristijan Koren , Christophe Riblon , Juan Antonio Flecha , Jérôme Pineau and Leonardo Duque . By the beginning of the first ascent to the Col du Télégraphe, they had a lead of over two minutes. There Chris Anker Sørensen first drove out of the field, which was followed a little later by an attack by Alberto Contador who caught up with him. He was followed by Andy and Fränk Schleck , Cadel Evans , Carlos Barredo and shortly thereafter Thomas Voeckler . When Contador started again, only Andy Schleck, Evans and Voeckler remained directly behind him. Meanwhile, the first drivers fell out of the leading group. Due to technical difficulties, Evans stayed behind when Contador started again, changed the bike and fell back into the main group. A little later Voeckler also lost touch, but before the summit stayed about 30 seconds behind Contador and Schleck, who together reached the top of the former breakaway group. In the mountain classification of the Col du Télégraphe, Izagirre was in front, followed by Schleck and Contador.

In the short descent and ascent to the Col du Galibier, the leading group shrank to five riders, consisting of Contador, Andy Schleck, Izagirre, Costa and Riblon. After that, Schleck also took on management work in order to increase the distance to his most important competitors, which initially succeeded. After Voeckler was able to keep the distance to the top for a long time, he fell back again as the climb continued. Due to the speed work of the BMC Racing Team , the chasing group was now also reduced, from which Rein Taaramae, wearer of the white jersey, fell back and Voeckler was overtaken. About 2.5 km from the summit, Samuel Sánchez attacked from this group , pursued by Evans. This was followed by a group with Fränk Schleck , Tom Danielson , Sandy Casar , Arnold Jeannesson , Damiano Cunego and Peter Velits . Voeckler could no longer follow this pace and fell out of this group. Freed from the task of helping out, his teammates Pierre Rolland and Anthony Charteau were able to catch up with the group around Charteau, whose gap fell to less than a minute. On the mountain classification at Col du Galibier, in front of the tunnel to be driven through, Andy Schleck was able to get the 20 points to be awarded and thus extend the lead in the mountain classification gained on the Télégraphe. Behind him were Contador, Costa and Riblon, who were still driving together.

On the Arfahrt, on which Contador was leading again, Sánchez, who was able to shake off his pursuers before the summit, worked his way closer to the group. But Evans also came closer, while Voeckler continued to lose ground. With 45 km to go, Sánchez caught up with the leading group. The chasing group now consisted of Evans, Fränk Schleck, Danielson, Ryder Hesjedal , Casar, Jeannesson, Cunego, Velits and Rolland. Behind it there was another group before Voeckler. The first two groups joined together about 25 km from the finish. Shortly afterwards, Rolland accelerated and Hesjedal caught up with him. Voeckler was also able to shorten the distance to the top in the flatter passage. Voeckler's group, in which Taramae also rode, now reached Evans' chase group again.

At the beginning of the final climb, Jakob Fuglsang attacked , followed by Evans and Fränk Schleck, a little behind Contador and Andy Schleck. Eventually Contador attacked again, overtook the two leaders and dropped them one after the other. Velits broke away from the chasing group, followed by Sánchez and Thomas De Gendt . A chasing duo of Sánchez and Rolland formed behind the leading Contador. Voeckler meanwhile lost time again on the top. Before him, Cunego broke away from Evans' group. With two and a half kilometers to go, Sánchez and Rolland finally caught up with Contador, whereupon Rolland took the lead. Behind it, Evans attacked, followed by Andy Schleck, and Cunego was overtaken by the two. At the front, Rolland was able to break away from his companions and win the stage. Due to his lead, he also won the white jersey. Sánchez crossed the finish line in second, thus securing the dotted jersey from Andy Schleck. Third and fourth places went to Contador and Velits. Evans did not manage to shake off his companions and so crossed the finish line with the Schleck brothers, Cunego and De Gent.

As with the 18th stage , the Gruppetto was not excluded, although it crossed the finish line outside of the waiting period. Once again, the jury deducted 20 points from the drivers' points assessment.
