geography
Unken is located in the Zell am See (Pinzgau) district in the Saalachtal , near the Steinpass border crossing ( Kleines Deutsches Eck ).
Unken is located north of the market town of Lofer , from which it is separated by the Kniepass . To the east, the Saalachtal is surrounded by the Reiter Steinberge and the Reiteralpe with the famous peaks of the Three Brothers ( 1864 m ). The Chiemgau Alps with the Sonntagshorn ( 1961 m ) form the natural border to the north and east . In the valley of Unken, the Saalachtal widens into an alluvial valley basin. In the Heutal , the extension of the Unkenbach to the east, but which drains to the north in the direction of Ruhpolding , there is a small ski area with three tow lifts that reach up to the Dürrnbachhorn ( 1776 m ).
32 of the 70 forest districts of the Bavarian Saalforste or a quarter of their area fall into the municipality of Unken and add up to 4628 hectares, i.e. 42.5 percent of the municipal area of Unken.
