Geography and traffic

The district covers an area of 2.28 square kilometers and is located in the north of the Duisburg city area. Neighboring districts are Overbruch in the north, Aldenrade in the south and Alt-Walsum in the west. At its eastern edge, Vierlinden borders the city of Dinslaken . The distance to the Rhine , which runs further west, is around three kilometers. Another river is the Emscher, about a kilometer to the northeast .

State roads 1 (as an extension of federal road 8 ) and 396 run through the district. At the eastern end, the A 59 also runs , which also marks the border with Dinslaken and runs south through Duisburg as a city motorway. The A59 is Duisburg's north-south axis in road traffic and begins in Duisburg-Vierlinden at the Dinslaken-West junction , which is located on the B8 known as Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and branches off from it.

In local public transport, the 903 tram runs through Vierlinden and has the Vierlinden and Watereck stops there . The latter has a turning facility for trams. In a northerly direction, the 903 creates a direct connection to Dinslaken and ends there at the train station , where you can change to regional rail traffic. In a southerly direction, the 903 acts as Duisburg's north-south axis in public transport and continues via Walsum Rathaus, Fahrn, Marxloh, Hamborn , Meiderich , Duissern , downtown ( main station ), Hochfeld , Wanheim-Angerhausen to Hüttenheim . There is also an express bus line (SB40) from Vierlinden via Rathaus Walsum (stop of the 903) and then non-stop via the A59 to the main train station . The tram line 903 can also be reached by the express bus line at the Vierlinden stop . At Franz-Lenze-Platz the ring line 905/906 is added, which runs to the district junction Franz-Lenze-Platz , as well as to Overbruch, Alt-Walsum or Rathaus Walsum (you can change to line 903), Wehofen , Oberhausen-Holten , Marxloh , Hamborn, Beeck to Beeckerwerth and line 915 to Dinslaken. history

For an expanded historical context, see also the history of the city of Duisburg and the history of Walsum .

The formerly relatively sparsely populated district took on its present form through developments in the late 19th and 20th centuries. A settlement of the area in Roman times in the 2nd and 3rd centuries can be proven by corresponding historical finds; presumably it was a single courtyard. In the Middle Ages, there was a small settlement, while the entire area was rural and had numerous other hamlets and farms. The site of the place at that time was extremely swampy and construction probably started in the 9th or 10th century. The medieval manor Haus Watereck also belongs to the area of today's Vierlinden.

The Vierlindenhof , whose remaining barn building burned down in 2012 and was demolished two years later, was built around 1800. It was named after four linden trees standing in front of it and served as a template for the name of the district in the 1920s. It was only during this time that the district, which was part of Walsum, lost its rural character and developed into an urban area. Decisive for this was the mining and the establishment of the nearby Walsum colliery in 1927. However, Vierlinden was only important as a place of residence for the workers, as coal was never mined directly on site. In the early 20th century, the Römerhof building temporarily served as the seat of the municipal administration in Walsum.

In the recent past this mining industry has lost its importance - the Walsum colliery closed in 2008 - but has remained in the local culture. Since January 1, 1975, Vierlinden has been a district of Duisburg through the incorporation of the previously independent city of Walsum.

Local infrastructure and cultural assets

The residential development in Vierlinde consists mainly of former mining settlements. Franz-Lenze-Platz forms a central location . There are a number of shops there, complemented by two weekly market days. In addition, the district library is located in the immediate vicinity. Finally, there is a larger green area with an associated football field . In general, the district is considered to be relatively natural.

The Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth is located in Vierlinden with an associated kindergarten of the same name. A well-known public building is also the Walsum all-weather pool . This swimming pool is characterized by the fact that its roof structure can be opened or closed if necessary.

A major local sports club is the DJK Vierlinden, founded in 1928 . It comprises various departments, including football, basketball and volleyball. In 2016, the association had 979 members. The future professional footballer Thorsten Albustin wore the club's jersey in his youth.
