The Vilsalpsee Mountains are a subgroup of the Allgäu Alps in Austria and Germany . The name is derived from the centrally located Vilsalpsee . At 2274 meters, the Leilachspitze is the highest mountain in this group. Many of the peaks in the group are frequently visited destinations and most of them have hiking trails.

Boundaries and surroundings

To the north, the Vilsalpsee Mountains are separated from the Tannheimer Tal from the Tannheimer Mountains . In the east, the Tannheimer Tal crosses the Gaichtpass into the Lechtal , the border to the Lechtal Alps . The Schwarzwasserbach flows a bit up the Lech , the valley of which forms the southern boundary of the Vilsalpsee mountains to the Rosszahn group. From Notländsattel the Vilsalpseeberge are of the (1847 m) Hochvogel group separately. The saddle is also the transition to the Hintersteiner Tal , in which the Ostrach flows and which represents the western border. At Bad Hindelang the border runs to the northeast and over the Oberjochpass (1178 m) into the Tannheimer Tal. The last neighboring group of the Vilsalpsee Mountains are the Allgäu Pre-Alps east of the Iller .

The Vilsalpseeberge are almost entirely located in the Austrian state of Tyrol . Only in the west does the border to Bavaria and Germany run over the Rauhhornzug . This means that the Vilsalpsee mountains are spread across the municipal areas of Schattwald , Zöblen , Tannheim , Grän , Nesselwängle , Weißenbach am Lech and Bad Hindelang in Germany.

mountains

The highest mountain in the Vilsalpsee group is the Leilachspitze (2274 m) in the southeast of the group. With the Gaishorn (2247 m) and the Rauhhorn (2240 m) in the west, only two other peaks reach a height of over 2200 meters. This is followed by the Krottenköpfe (2180 m), the Kälbelespitze with 2135 meters and the Rote Spitze (2130 m).

Other prominent peaks of the group are Sulzspitze (2084 m), Kühgundkopf (1907 m), Litnisschrofen (2068 m), Krinnenspitze (2000 m), Ponten (2044 m), Lachenspitze (2126 m), Kugelhorn (2126 m), Schänzlekopf ( 2070 m), Schochenspitze (2069 m), Lahnerkopf (2121 m), Rohnenspitze (1990 m), Schänzlespitze (2052 m) and Roßkopf (1823 m).

geology

The predominant rock in the area of the summits is the main dolomite . Underneath there are often layers of Lias marl or aptych lime .

Waters

Schrecksee

There are four lakes in the Vilsalpsee Mountains. In addition to the 57  hectare Vilsalpsee (1165 m) in the center, there is the Schrecksee (1813 m) in the west of the group . This is a partially dammed lake with an island. It is used to generate energy, just like the Traualpsee (1630 m) above the Vilsalpsee. Other lakes are the Lache (1770 m) and the Alplsee (1600 m).

The runoff of the Alplsee plunges down to the Vilsalpsee as Bärgacht waterfall . Important rivers in the area of the group are the Weißenbach and the Vils as well as the Schwarzwasserbach.

nature

From a botanical point of view, the Vilsalpsee group is an interesting area, the Geierköpfle (2020 m), the Rote Spitze and the Schochenspitze as well as the Gappenfelder Notländ in the Kar west of the Lachenspitze should be mentioned. A large part of this region of the south-western part of the group has been protected by the Vilsalpsee nature reserve since 1957. 700 plant species are counted in the 18.2  square kilometer protected area, including orchids such as the green hollow tongue , the broad-leaved orchid and the orchid . Ornithologically significant is the Vilsalpsee with the highest breeding area of the great crested grebe in Austria. The black grouse lives in the Gappenfelder Notland .

Alpinism

There are overnight bases in the Vilsalpsee group: the Alpenvereinshütte Landsberger Hütte (1810 m) and the Willersalpe (1456 m). Otherwise, the villages in the north and west are close to the accesses to the mountains and are therefore ideal starting points.

Hiking and mountaineering

For the most part, the Jubiläumsweg and a variant of the Violet Path of the Via Alpina run in parallel over the Gaishorn to the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus . With the Saalfelder Höhenweg a high path crosses the central part of the group from the Haldensee to the Kälbelespitze.

While many peaks can be reached on easy mountain hiking trails, there are also mountains that can only be climbed on challenging routes. These include the Rauhhorn, the Leilachspitze and the Litnisschrofen, on which the climbs up to the I.-II. Demand degree . Other peaks in the area of the southern Rauhhornzug are not accessible at all and are difficult to climb, according to the Kälbelespitze.

Climbing sport

Iseler via ferrata

What does this climbing is concerned, the Vilsalpseeberge play a subordinate role. There are not many routes, the north ridge and north-west face of the Rote Spitze with difficulties around the IVth degree should be mentioned. The north face of the Lachenspitze and the northwest ridge of the Schochenspitze have a similar difficulty. There are also more difficult climbs on the Krottenköpf , for example the north face of the east summit with IV and the north pillar of the west summit with VI.

In 2008 and 2009 a via ferrata was built on the Iseler -Kühgund massif . The three-part climb leads through the north face to the summit of the Iseler (1876 m) and further through the north face to the Kühgundkopf. The rating of the key points is C , but for the most part it is B. The via ferrata is not allowed to be climbed from November to June.

Also in 2009, the Landsberg Alpine Club section completed a via ferrata of difficulty C / D through the north face of the Lachenspitze.

Winter sports

Krinnenspitze ski area

On the north side of the Vilsalpsee Mountains, numerous mountain flanks are accessible by lifts , where alpine skiing is possible in winter . At Iseler and Kühgundkopf it is the ski area of the Hindelang-Oberjoch mountain railways that takes skiers to various ski slopes with eight transport systems .

In the Tannheimer Tal, the Tannheimer Bergbahnen operate the ski areas in Schattwald, Zöblen and Tannheim, and the slopes of Kühgundkopf, Rohnenspitze and Vogelhörnle are used . The largest cable car is the Neunerköpfle cable car with eight seats. In addition, the Nesselwängle lift company is represented with a ski area on the Krinnenspitze.

Popular ski tours are the Ponten over the Güntle , the northern flank of the Gaishorn and the Sulzspitze through the Strindental .
