Wolsk ( Russian Вольск ) is a city in the Russian Oblast of Saratov . It has 66,508 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located on the banks of the Volga , 147 km northeast of the regional capital Saratov . Wolsk is the administrative center of Wolsk Raion .

history

The city was founded at the mouth of the small river Malykowka in the Volga . In 1690 the large village Malykowskaja ( Малыковская ) was mentioned at this point . At the end of the 17th century, Prince A. L. Vyazemsky was given this region as a country seat. The prince took care of the expansion of the village and promoted the development of the village into the city of Wolsk. In 1780 the city received the status of a district town of Ujesds Volgsk (the name changed to today's name Wolsk in the course of the 19th century) in the Saratov governorate .

During the Weimar Republic there was a secret German-Soviet military cooperation from 1922 to 1933, which also included a joint school for chemical warfare with Tomka near Wolsk (in today's Schichany ). In Wolsk there were two POW camps 137 and 265 for German POWs from World War II . Seriously ill people were cared for in the prisoner of war hospitals in 1691 and 5134 .

economy

After the October Revolution , Wolsk became an important center of cement production and has remained so to this day. There is also mechanical engineering, a brewery and a textile factory.

There is also an arms factory in Wolsk, which produces , among other things, the Russian 9K135 Kornet anti-tank guided missile .

Attractions

Wolsk has a local history museum with a picture gallery. A peculiarity of the city are the architectural decorations of the stone buildings, which were executed in the style of Russian classicism of the 19th century. Among them are the house of the merchant Menkowa (today's museum of local history), a number of decorated house numbers and the merchant's villas.
