Yuan T. Lee
Yuan Tseh Lee ( Chinese 李遠哲 , Pinyin Lǐ Yuǎnzhé ; born November 19, 1936 in Shinchiku , Japanese Empire ) is a Taiwanese chemist .
In 1986 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry together with Dudley R. Herschbach and John C. Polanyi “for their contributions to the dynamics of elementary chemical processes” .
Lee studied from 1955 at the National University of Taiwan ( Bachelor 1959) and at the Tsing Hua National University , where he made his master's degree in chemistry. From 1962 he was at the University of California, Berkeley , where he at Bruce Mahan with the work in 1965 Photoionization of alkali metal vapors doctorate was. From 1967 he was in the group of Herschbach at Harvard University , where he improved the molecular beam experiments (crossed beam experiments) to study chemical reactions, which was his main field of research after that. From 1968 he was Assistant Professor at the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago , from 1971 as Associate Professor and from 1973 as Professor. In 1974 he went back to Berkeley, where he was a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory . Among other things, he was visiting professor at Caltech ( Fairchild Scholar 1983).
In 1981 he received the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Prize , in 1986 the Peter Debye Award from the American Chemical Society and in 1986 the National Medal of Science .
Lee was President of Academia Sinica until October 19, 2006 (of which he has been a member since 1980), for which he had to give up his 1974 US citizenship . His successor was Chi-Huey Wong . Lee was President of the International Science Council from 2011 to 2014 . He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1975), the National Academy of Sciences (1979) and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . In 1980 he received an honorary professorship at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and he is an honorary professor at several Chinese universities (such as Fudan University in Shanghai). He was a Sloan Research Fellow in 1969/71 and a Guggenheim Fellow in 1976/77 . In 1986 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Waterloo .
He is married and has two sons and a daughter.
