The known candidates with national campaigns are Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson. Withdrawn candidates who had national campaigns are Sam Brownback, Jim Gilmore, Tommy Thompson, and Tom Tancredo.

18 of West Virginia's 30 delegates to the Republican National Convention are selected by a Winner-Take-All Caucus (Roll Call vote) at the State Presidential Convention.
- If a Presidential Candidate receives more than half of the vote on the first roll call, that candidate receives all 18 At-Large National Delegates. Otherwise, the roll call is repeated with only the three highest vote getters.
- If a candidate receives more than half of the second roll call vote, that candidate receives all 18 At-Large National Delegates. Otherwise, the roll call is repeated with only the two highest vote getters.
- The candidate receiving the majority in the third roll call vote receives all 18 At-Large National Delegates. A tie in the final roll call vote is then thrown to the county delegates.
