The tenge ( Kazakh теңге / Tengge ) is the currency of Kazakhstan . 1 tenge is divided into 100 Tiyn (Kazakh тиын ). The currency was introduced on November 15, 1993, it replaced the Russian ruble . 500 rubles were exchanged for 1 tenge.
Meaning of the word and history
The name of the currency is derived from the old Turkish term “tamga” or “denga”, which stands for a measure of weight and thus has a meaning comparable to that of pound , lira and peso . The Russian term for 'money' Деньги (Dengi) has the same Old Turkish tribe as the Tenge. In Kazakh, "tenge" means something like "balance".
Already in the Emirate of Bukhara and in the briefly existing People's Republic of Bukhara , the name of the currency used was "Tenge".
Cash
Today there are only coins and banknotes in the tenge unit. Coins and banknotes belonging to the Tiyn unit were withdrawn from circulation.
Coins
Circulation coins
There are currently tenge coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 tenge. On the obverse of the tenge coins is the value of the coin, on the reverse the coat of arms of Kazakhstan. In 1993, the 1, 5, 10 and 20 tenge coins were introduced. The 50 tenge coin followed in 1997 and 100 tenge was introduced in 2002. It wasn't until 2005 that a two tenge coin was issued.
The 100 tenge coin consists of two different alloys ( bimetal and copper - nickel ). The 50 and 20 tenge coins are made of copper-nickel and the remaining coins are made of brass .
Commemorative tenge coins
Until 1999, the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued 20-tenge commemorative coins, which were eventually replaced by 50-tenge commemorative coins. Six different series of these commemorative coins are currently being minted (series events, personalities, orders of merit, customs and national games, wildlife and space travel).
There are also numerous other commemorative coins of 100 tenge and 500 tenge. Gold coins are also issued.
Banknotes
The current tenge banknotes were introduced in 2006, replacing the old 1993 editions. There are seven banknote denominations: 200 tenge, 500 tenge, 1000 tenge, 2000 tenge, 5000 tenge and 10,000 tenge. Since August 1, 2000, the National Bank of Kazakhstan does not bring notes of 1, 3 and 5 tenge, and any banknotes since 1 November 2000 on 10, 20 and 50 tenge more in circulation.
The front sides of the notes show the Bajterek tower as a motif , the backs each have motifs from the areas of architecture or flora and fauna in Kazakhstan.

- Revisions
Only a few years after the introduction of new banknotes, the National Bank began issuing revised drafts. On January 30, 2011, new banknotes with a face value of 5,000 tenge were issued, the front of which no longer corresponded to the previous design of the series from 2006. A new edition of the 10,000 tenge banknote followed in 2011 and the new design of the 2,000 tenge banknote was presented in 2013.

A new design has now been put into circulation for the reissue banknotes. The main motif was then expanded. The Berner Zeitung reported in December 2017 that the Kazakh national bank had used a picture of a black-headed gull from Wikimedia Commons to design the 500 tenge note .
Commemorative banknotes
So far, six commemorative banknotes have been issued by the Kazakh National Bank. The first banknote was issued on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Kazakh national currency in 2008. The second commemorative banknote was issued by the Kazakh National Bank on the chairmanship of Kazakhstan in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe . The third commemorative banknote followed in 2011 for the seventh Asian Winter Games in 2011 , which took place in Almaty and Astana . In the same year, two more commemorative banknotes were issued for Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and 20 Years of Independence. At the end of December 2013, a banknote followed, the subject of which is Kul Tigin, a former general of the Kök Turks .
