The 2nd Bundesliga is the second highest German division in women's handball .

In the 2nd Bundesliga, 14 teams compete in a league system in which each club plays a return match against every other club. The first two teams will be promoted to the 1st handball league .

Above the 2nd Bundesliga is the 1st Bundesliga with 16 teams. This is followed by the four-track 3rd division .

From its introduction in 1985 to 2011, the 2nd Bundesliga was divided into two seasons, north and south . From 1991 to 1994 there was also a third middle season . From the 2011/12 season, the 2nd Bundesliga was played in a relay with 16 teams. The games are organized by the Handball Bundesliga Vereinigung-Frauen (HBV-F). 14 teams have played in the 2nd Bundesliga since the 2014/15 season.

The first two finishers will be promoted to the Bundesliga. The four teams in places 11-14 are relegated to the 3rd division. Similarly, the last two in the 1st Bundesliga are relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga and the four champions in the 3rd Bundesliga are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.

The champions of the single-track 2nd Bundesliga (since 2012)

The single-track 2nd handball Bundesliga was introduced for the 2011/12 season. Since then, 16 club teams have taken part in the league. The teams in 1st place (champions) and 2nd place move up to the handball Bundesliga .
