The 31st German Evangelical Church Congress took place from June 6th to 10th, 2007 under the motto "lively and strong and sharper" ( Heb 4.12  EU ) in Cologne ; The host was the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . Around 200,000 visitors and 50,000 participants were expected in advance. The title song, named after the motto of the Kirchentag, was interpreted by the Cologne singing quintet Wise Guys , whose singer Daniel Dickopf composed and wrote it especially for the Kirchentag.

responsible person

The president of the 31st Kirchentag was Reinhard Höppner , the general secretary Ellen Ueberschär . The managing directors were Bernd Baucks, Ulrich Schneider , Volker Knöll and Hartwig Bodmann.

opening

The Kirchentag was opened on Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. with opening services on Poller Wiesen with speeches by President Nikolaus Schneider , Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and Lord Mayor Fritz Schramma , on Roncalliplatz, on Heumarkt and in Gürzenich . Another unofficial service was held for those involved in the Market of Opportunities in Hall 4.1 of the exhibition grounds .

The church services were followed from 6:30 p.m. in Cologne's inner and old town by the evening of encounters , the street festival at the opening of a church conference for around 300,000 people. In Cologne , the motto was Always there and offered a program on 15 stages and 450 food and action stands. Among others were Wolfgang Niedecken , front man of the Cologne rock band BAP , and the Cologne a cappella group Basta . At the end of the evening, the evening glow by the Cologne composer and trumpeter Markus Stockhausen was performed, in which, with over 1000 winds in six trombone choirs, a carpet of sound was laid across the Rhine on both banks of the Rhine, and during the evening blessing by President Nikolaus Schneider the fish, the symbol of the Cologne Church Congress, the Hohenzollern Bridge was illuminated.

Events and contributors

The Kirchentag was divided into the three subject areas of man , community and world , to which the events were assigned. There were also spiritual events such as Bible studies , church services and meditations, as well as cultural offers such as concerts, church music, open singing, art exhibitions, music and dance workshops and theater performances.

Numerous politicians as well as current and former federal ministers took part in discussions, Bible studies and lectures. In addition to numerous experts and theologians of various denominations, Bible studies were also carried out by politicians Ute Canaris , Jürgen Ebach , Katrin Göring-Eckardt , Thomas de Maizière , Reinhold Robbe , Jürgen Rüttgers , Wolfgang Schäuble , Henning Scherf , Guntram Schneider , Wolfgang Thierse , Erhard Eppler , Antje Vollmer , Karin von Welck , Klaus Töpfer , Norbert Blüm , Angela Merkel and Horst Köhler also took part in further discussions and lectures .

Prominent scholars and theologians from the Catholic and Anglican Churches , the Jewish religion and Islam as well as prominent lay people, for example actors and artists, participated in Bible studies and theological dialogues. Performances by cabaret artists such as Matthias Deutschmann and music contributions such as that of Fritz Baltruweit's studio group Baltruweit were part of the entertainment program.

Several ecumenical services with Catholics were also held. A large ecumenical service was held in Cologne Cathedral on June 9, 2007 with Joachim Meisner , the Archbishop of Cologne, President Nikolaus Schneider and the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Augoustinos , who also included Orthodox Christians in addition to Catholics.

Praeses Nikolaus Schneider and Joachim Cardinal Meisner took part in a much-noticed dialogue Bible study on ( Jer 23.16  EU ) to ( Jer 23.32  EU ), which was largely based on consensus. Finally, Cardinal Meisner dealt with “false prophets” today.

Other prominent Catholic theologians also took part: Karl Lehmann , the Archbishop of Mainz and Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, and Father Anselm Grün , who carried out a Bible study that caused such a crowd that the entrance to the hall had to be stopped due to overcrowding.

Other Protestant theologians participated: Jörg Zink , who gave several Bible studies, a remarkable lecture on meditation and took part in a discussion on the generation conflict, the regional bishop Margot Käßmann , Bishop Wolfgang Huber , Konrad Raiser , pastor Friedrich Schorlemmer , Rosemarie Wenner and Antje Vollmer as well as pastor Kathy Galloway from the Iona Community .

Mandate holders such as Wolfgang Schäuble , Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and Chancellor Dr. Thomas de Maizière . Horst Köhler , the German Federal President, Suvarna Gandham and Peter Krämer participated in an event about shaping globalization .

The actor Peter Sodann and the poet Kathrin Passig were prominent laypeople at the Kirchentag.

At the Kirchentag, the Cologne Bläck Fööss performed together with the Protestant trombone choirs . Naturally 7 gave a concert in front of Cologne Cathedral and also offered workshops on gospel music. The network Neue Töne of the composer Bernhard König set impulses for experimental church music in several events.

Only Christian bands took part in the Power of Love Festival on Friday, including Dieter Falk , Ararat , Allee der Kosmonauten and the Newsboys . At this event, the Christoffel-Blindenmission distributed free wooden guardian angels, which were attached to a blue ribbon and for which a voluntary donation was asked. A talk was held with the well-known Christian pop singer Sarah Brendel .

There were also performances by the Christian songwriters Birgit Kley with her colleagues Jonathan Böttcher and Helmut Krüger, who also wrote, composed and recorded the official Kirchentags CD for a good reason , Eugen Eckert with Habakuk and Clemens Bittlingers , who in addition to concerts also sing freely offered in which the audience could join in the songs.

A mixture of Christian music, cabaret and dance performances took place on the YMCA stage, I believe it, on Neumarkt. The young dancers from iThemba impressed with synchronous dance performances to South African hip-hop music and pantomime performances, for example on the topic of AIDS . In between programs, team members shared their personal experiences of believing in Jesus Christ , who had helped them cope with problems such as alcohol addiction, adult indifference, rape, and hopelessness. The "Klaun KG" offered acrobatics such as unicycling and juggling, paired with comedy and black humor.

The political event The Power of Dignity: Rethinking Globalization accompanied the G8 summit in Heiligendamm . Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa, Susan George from Attac France, Kirchentag President Reinhard Höppner and EKD chairman Wolfgang Huber took part. The music from Brothers Keepers , Rolf Stahlhofen and Afrob accompanied this event.

A highlight of the Kirchentag was the event moderated by Wolf von Lojewski on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at which Angela Merkel and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus , who had already participated in another discussion on Millennium Development Goals the day before, about shaping the world economy debated, and which took place in a completely overcrowded hall. The discussion was broadcast over loudspeakers in the hall next to it, where the audience was also very crowded.

An important event was “God in Everyday Life”, in which Dietrich Grönemeyer and Wolf von Lojewski discussed experiences of God between omnipotence and powerlessness and incorporated practical experiences from their professional world. Marianne Birthler and Christine von Weizsäcker also took part in this event , who presented their experience of God in everyday life.

The event How is Protestant? - That's how Protestant works! , which dealt with the basics of Protestant faith on Roncalliplatz in front of Cologne Cathedral and spoke to Wolf von Lojewski, Reinhard Höppner and theologians Margot Käßmann and Konrad Raiser, was very well received. Following the discussion, Kirchentag President Reinhard Höppner questioned the results of the G8 summit during the evening prayer and the progress made in an agreement on climate protection was welcomed; the news from the Tagesschau was shown on the monitor wall. Höppner reprimanded the aggressive actions of the police against the Greenpeace activists, whereby a Greenpeace rubber dinghy was run over by a police speedboat, saying that the police should have adopted the Greenpeace declaration and passed it on to the responsible politicians. At the same time, he criticized the Black Bloc activists for drawing the public's attention by throwing stones and distracting them from the real problems, the plight of the developing countries and global warming. Höppner mentioned that one can only live in peace if the enemy has a livelihood, and thus referred to the Sermon on the Mount ( Mt 5.44  EU ).

Federal Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung took part in a panel discussion that dealt with terrorism and how it can be overcome. Franz Müntefering faced a discussion about Hartz IV .

On the market of possibilities with the connected media mile and the fair in the market , over 700 exhibition stands in 6 exhibition halls, which were divided according to the subject areas of people , community and world , offered information and contact options.

At several stands, for a minimum donation of two euros, orange-colored scarves with the inscriptions “What does it help people ...?” ( Mt 16.26  EU ) and “Rethink globalization” were given. This campaign was intended to send a visual signal to the G8 summit in Heiligendamm.

More than 50 representatives of different religions and clergy from different Christian churches sent a common message to the G8 summit in Heiligendamm.

The global problems of justice , peace , the integrity of creation , climate change and globalization were discussed in numerous events, for example with Desmond Tutu and Susan George from attac France.

There was also a live connection to the rock concert in Rostock, which took place parallel to the G8 summit.

The closing service was celebrated on June 10, 2007 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. around a stage on the Poller Wiesen in the south of Cologne in front of over 100,000 people. Pastor Mechthild Werner from Erfurt gave the sermon on the biblical phrase “Stand up and eat” ( 1 Kings 19.1–13 EU ). She contrasted  hunger in many developing countries with overeating in industrialized countries and questioned the applicability of the Bible verse for the latter . Kirchentag President Höppner called for respect for human dignity, including against enemies such as the Taliban and terrorists. Peace can only be achieved where the enemy also has a humane place. The a cappella group Wise Guys , the Gli Scarlattisti chamber choir, Matthias Nagel with a project band and numerous trombone choirs contributed to the musical design of the service . Traditionally, towards the end of the service, the Osnabrück Bishop Franz-Josef Bode invited to the next Catholic Day , the 97th German Catholic Day 2008 in Osnabrück , and the Secretary of the Bremen Evangelical Church Renke Brahms invited to the 32nd German Evangelical Church Day 2009 in Bremen.

The Wise Guys and cabaret artist Susanne Hermanns performed in the post-program from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Helper services

By May 11, 2007 over 4,750 volunteers registered to support the Kirchentag. About three quarters of these helpers were recruited from various boy scout leagues and associations.

Among other things, the helpers were tasked with setting up and dismantling the stands , with steward services, road closures, looking after guests at the international youth camp, distributing the Lord's Supper and cleaning the toilets . Around 1000 helpers were busy cleaning the toilets and the surrounding area at this year's Kirchentag alone.

Environmental certificate

In June 2007, the German Evangelical Church Congress was awarded the EMAS environmental certificate for its environmental management system, which has been firmly anchored for years .

Orders of magnitude

According to the organizers, around 103,000 permanent guests took part in the 2007 Evangelical Church Congress. In addition, 50,000 day participants were counted. According to the organizers, around 400,000 people attended the “Evening of Encounter” after the opening service, which was combined with a street festival on both sides of the Rhine. According to media reports, the events of the Kirchentag were attended by a total of around one million people.
