American Gods is an American television series based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman , which combines fantasy , classical and modern mythology, and American folklore . It was developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green and has been broadcast on Starz since April 30, 2017 .

Shadow Moon is in prison for three years for a failed robbery . Three days before the end of his term in prison, he was released surprisingly earlier after his wife Laura died. Soon he meets a man named Mr. Wednesday, who offers him a job as his bodyguard . This gives him an insight into a world in which old and new gods have become real through people's beliefs. The old gods, who have integrated themselves into American life, are now being reassembled by Mr. Wednesday in order to be able to hold their own against the new gods that are gaining strength.

Charisma
On April 30, 2017, the series was broadcast for the first time on Starz . In German-speaking countries, it has been available on Amazon Video 24 hours after the US premiere since May 1, 2017 . The series was then also broadcast on RTL Crime and is available from iTunes , among others .
After only two episodes broadcast, the creators confirmed that a second season with at least eight episodes is also being planned.

Felix Böhme from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de thinks that the “fantastic story by author Neil Gaiman , a perfect cast and Bryan Fuller's unique vision [...] make American Gods an absolute eye-catcher”. The pilot episode of the crazy road trip is "a feast for all the senses".
In his column for the first episode at Spiegel Online, Andreas Borcholte emphasized the series' “moral abysmalness and explicit depictions of violence and sex”. In addition, the creators have succeeded in creating a "delightful and visually unfolding panorama" that seems "more urgent and topical than ever" despite its 15-year-old template. He compares the content with "perhaps the largest area of conflict and tension of the Trump era". At the end he writes that one will "not only have to talk about this series because of its obvious taboos".
