Aogashima ( Japanese 青 ヶ 島村 , - mura ) is a village on the island of the same name in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo .
geography
Like the other island communities of Tokyo, the village is not assigned to a district ( gun ), but to a sub-prefecture, here the sub-prefecture Hachijō . Aogashima is the smallest community in Japan in terms of population. It is 358 km south of Tokyo . The settlement is located in the northern part of the island and is divided by the inhabitants into two hamlets: Nishigō ( 西 郷 , "western hamlet") in the west and Yasundogō ( 休 戸 郷 ) in the east. In the crater that characterizes the southern part of the island, there is a campsite and other economic buildings.
traffic
From the port of Aogashima ( 青 ヶ 島 港 , -kō ), also called Sampō-port ( 三宝 港 , -kō ), the passenger ship Kanjū-maru ( 還 住 丸 ) runs through the Yaene fishing port ( 八 重 根 漁港 , Yaene- gyokō ) in Hachijō on the island of the same name . Every Saturday the cargo ship Kuroshio-maru ( 黒 潮 丸 ) also calls at Sokodo port ( 底 土 港 , -kō ) on Hachijō-jima from this port . In 1995, the Ōchiyo port ( 大 千代 港 , -kō ) was completed as a supplement, but its access road became impassable after a landslide.
The Tōkyō Ai-Land Shuttle ( 東京 愛 ら ん ど シ ャ ト ル , ~ Shatoru ) serves daily flights to Hachijō-jima from a heliport . From there, flights to the Mikura-jima heliport on Mikura-jima , to Ōshima airport on Ōshima and to Tokyo-Haneda airport take place.
economy
Specialties of the island are Hingya salt ( ひ ん ぎ ゃ の 塩 , Hingya no shio ), which is made from seawater that is pumped up and evaporated using volcanic heat, and a potato shōchū called Aochū ( 青 酎 ).
education
Due to the small population there is only one school on the islands, the Aogashima elementary and middle school ( 青 ヶ 島村 立 青 ヶ 島 小 中 学校 , Aogashima sonritsu Aogashima shō-chū gakkō ).
