Auvergne is the family of the Counts of Auvergne from the 10th century.

history

It comes from the Vice Counts of Auvergne, who were established at the end of the 9th century when the Auvergne was owned by the Dukes of Aquitaine . After the death of Duke Wilhelm III. In 963 and the following battles within Aquitaine, the balance of power shifted in favor of the vice counts, who soon rose to become Counts of Auvergne.

Around 1155 after the death of Count Robert III. († probably 1145) within the family to the crisis. The county inherited Robert's son Wilhelm VII , but his uncle Wilhelm , Count von Velay , took advantage of the young Count's participation in the Second Crusade (1147–1149) in order to appropriate almost the entire Auvergne, and the absent heir only a few lords let, who then ruled his successors as the Dauphin of Auvergne (the mother of William VII came from the family of the Dauphin von Viennois ).

Since the Count and Dauphin were partisans of the Plantagenet , the French King Philip August occupied part of Auvergne in 1195 (including the capital Riom ) and added it to the Domaine royal in 1213 as Terre d'Auvergne . After a renewed intervention by the king, caused by a dispute between Count Guido II and the clergy of the country, the entire county was confiscated and incorporated into the Domaine royal. 1241 a new county Auvergne, much as the old county built smaller and the son of Guido II. Was William X. given.

The line of the Dauphins d'Auvergne died out in 1436, the property was bequeathed to the dukes of Bourbon . The line of the Counts of Auvergne expired in 1442, it was Duke of Johann von Berry who should continue the line. However, the childlessness of the last countess led through a cousin to the fact that the house inherited La Tour , which was renamed La Tour d'Auvergne after the inheritance.

The Auvergne house is also referred to in literature as the "House of the Vice Counts of Auvergne", as the first lords had the title of Vice Count and other families had ruled the Auvergne in the centuries before ( Ramnulfiden , Gellones , House Barcelona ).
