Beliș [ ˈbeliʃ ] (outdated Bălcești ; Hungarian Jósikafalva ) is a municipality in Cluj County in Transylvania , Romania .

The municipality of Beliș consists of six villages and is located on an area of ​​over 20,500 hectares in the Apuseni Mountains (Munții Apuseni) . Located on the 1R national road , south of the Dealu Negru pass at the Beliș-Fântânele reservoir - a reservoir of the Someșul Cald (Warm Somesch)  - the community center is 27 kilometers south of the small town of Huedin and about 55 kilometers west of the district capital Cluj -Napoca ( Cluj ) away.

history

The place Beliș was first mentioned in documents in 1369 or 1770 and belonged to the Hungarian village Văleni (Walken) .

The construction of the dam on the upper reaches of Someșul Cald was planned in the late 1960s, so that between 1970 and 1974 the residents were relocated. The dam, 92 meters high and 400 meters long, was completed in 1978. When the water level is low, the remains of the former settlement and the church built in 1913 by the Hungarian magnate Urmánczy in what was then Giurcuța de Jos can be seen.

Since 1850 the highest number of inhabitants and that of the Romanians in 1966 have been determined in the area of ​​today's municipality. The highest population of the Magyars (282) and the Romanian Germans (38) was registered in 1910 and that of the Roma (15) in 1930. In earlier recordings, some residents identified themselves as Slovaks .
