Steinwiesen is a market in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria . It is the largest municipality in the Upper Rodachtal region .

Geographical location

Steinwiesen belongs to the Franconian Forest Nature Park and is located in the Rodach valley . The Wilde Rodach flows into the Rodach south of Steinwiesen .

history

Steinwiesen train station

Steinwiesen was first mentioned in a document in 1323. The community was granted market rights on August 11, 1939.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent communities of Birnbaum and Nurn as well as Neufang were incorporated without the town of Schäferei.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 4009 to 3443 by 566 or 14.1%. On December 31, 1995 Steinwiesen had 4,154 inhabitants.

Steinwiesen is on the St 2207 one kilometer north of the B 173 , which connects to the A 73 near Bad Staffelstein and the A 9 near Naila . On July 26, 1900 Steinwiesen received a connection to the German railway network via the Rodachtalbahn to Kronach . In 1976 the passenger traffic was stopped, the section from Kronach to Steinwiesen was dismantled. A museum railway has been in operation on the remaining stretch from Steinwiesen to Nordhalben since 2007 . The Franconian Marienweg runs through the village .
