Big Rocks is the first cover album and a total of eighteenth studio album by the Swiss hard rock band Krokus . It contains the singles " The House of the Rising Sun " and " Rockin 'in the Free World ".

background

Following the releases of the last studio album Dirty Dynamite and the last live album Long Stick Goes Boom: Live from da House of Rust , things got quiet around Krokus in 2016. After extensive tour and festival activities in 2013 and 2014, in which Flavio Mezzodi was confirmed as a permanent band member behind the drums, and numerous other festival appearances in 2015, the formation only played a single festival appearance at the Riverside Open Air in Aarburg, Switzerland in 2016 . Without leaking any information to the public, front man Marc Storace decided to record a cover album for the three guitarists Fernando von Arb, Mandy Meyer and Mark Kohler, bassist Chris von Rohr and drummer Flavio Mezzodi during this time. The aim of the band was, on the one hand, to pay tribute to musical role models whose roots lie predominantly in the 1960s and, on the other hand, to interpret their classic songs in such a way that they unmistakably sound like crocus. For this reason, the decision was made not to put an AC / DC cover on the album, since Krokus and AC / DC are musically and stylistically in a very similar spectrum. Only with the release of the first single, a cover of The Animals interpretation of the American folk song " The House of the Rising Sun ", in November 2016 did specific information about the album reach the public. The work, in turn produced by bassist and band leader Chris von Rohr and baptized Big Rocks , was finally released at the end of January 2017 and contains, including the hidden track, a total of 13 cover versions plus a new recording of the band's own classic "Back-Seat Rock 'n' Roll ". It should be noted, however, that the introductory Black Sabbath cover "NIB" does not include the complete song, but is only an intro for the album. In addition, the concluding hidden track is an unpolished, hardly edited cover of the blues classic "Baby, Please Don't Go" by Big Joe Williams, recorded live in the studio . Although cover albums are often rated critically, Big Rocks was able to seamlessly build on past successes. Thanks to “The House of the Rising Sun” and the second single, the Neil Young cover “Rockin 'in the Free World” with video clips, the album was able to place in several European charts. In Switzerland, like Rock the Block , Hoodoo and Dirty Dynamite before, it was number 1 in the album charts. In Germany the cover album climbed to number 31 and in Austria to number 36. The album also entered the two Belgian chart lists: It reached number 97 in the Walloon charts and number 137 in the Flemish charts. After the album was released, Krokus played two co-headlining appearances with Gotthard in German-speaking Switzerland at the beginning of March 2017 , first in the Bernexpo festival hall in Bern and then in the Samsung Hall in Dübendorf near Zurich . Another very well-known Swiss rock band, Shakra , performed as a special guest in the opening act. Shortly afterwards they played two more concerts with Gotthard in the Salle Metropole in Lausanne , but without Shakra in the opening act. In May 2017, Krokus made a concert trip to Malta - the home country of singer Marc Storace. The most successful rock band from Switzerland will then attend many festival dates in the summer. Among other things, she will perform on the Loreley open-air stage of the RockFels Festival in St. Goarshausen , at the Rock The Ring Festival in Hinwil, at the Norway Rock Festival in Kvinesdal , at the Bang Your Head Open Air in Balingen , at the Skogsrojet Festival in Rejmyre, Sweden and at the Alcatraz Festival in Kortrijk, Belgium . A concert tour to the USA may also be undertaken in the fall. Big Rocks is the first album since the live release Alive And Screamin ' in 1986, when the band Krokus has a constant line-up compared to the previous album .
