The eponymous town center Albbruck with its districts Kiesenbach, Alb and Albert was first mentioned in 1403. The district of Birkingen was first mentioned in a document in 814 as "Birchinga" and initially belonged to the St. Gallen Monastery until it fell to the St. Blasien Monastery in 1528 . Birndorf was also mentioned for the first time in a document in 814. The district has a three-aisled church in Romanesque style. The church belonged to the Teutonic Knight Order, which had its seat in Castle Beuggen . Since 1271 the Dinghof in Birndorf belonged to the St. Blasien monastery. The district of Buch is mentioned as “Puach” in the St. Gallen document book.

In the sandstone quarries near Unteralpfen, a “fragment” of a Labyrinthodontia sp. discovered. It was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942 in the Natural History Museum in Karlsruhe .

From 1929 to 1934 the Albbruck-Dogern power plant was built under the direction of the Swiss civil engineer Heinrich Eduard Gruner , who became an honorary citizen in Albbruck in 1933.

On April 2, 1945, Albbruck was the target of an air raid. 4 people lost their lives.

On July 1, 1991, the district archives were merged into a newly built hall in the industrial area to form the district archive of the Waldshut district.

Spatial development

On April 1, 1924, the previously independent communities of Albbruck, Alb and Kiesenbach were combined to form the "new" community of Albbruck. On October 1, 1936, the Albert parish was incorporated into this parish. As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , the two previously independent municipalities Birndorf and Schachen (district of Säckingen) were incorporated on January 1, 1973, and today's municipality of Albbruck was merged from the municipalities of Albbruck, Birkingen, Buch and Unteralpfen on January 1, 1975 newly formed.

Community partnerships

Albbruck has had an official partnership with the Italian municipality of Carmignano di Brenta , Veneto region , Padua province , since 1965 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest local company was the Albbruck paper mill with a capacity of 310,000 tons of paper per year. In January 2011 it was acquired by the Finnish owner Myllykoski , which is also Finnish company UPM-Kymmene , which closed the paper mill at the beginning of 2012. UPM sold both the site and the factory to the Karl Group from Innernzell , which would like to set up businesses there.

A major tourist road is the L 154, which connects Albbruck with St. Blasien through the Alb valley. However, since Whitsun 2015 it has been closed between Albbruck-Hohenfels and Görwihl-Tiefenstein due to the risk of rock falls. It is uncertain whether it will ever open again. The Albbruck station is on the Hochrheinbahn .
