Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz ( debate ? / I ) (born September 13, 1950 in Warsaw ) is a Polish politician , lawyer and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland . Audio file / audio sample

Cimoszewicz was Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Attorney General (October 26, 1993 to March 1, 1995), Deputy Sejm Marshal (March 3, 1995 to February 7, 1996), Prime Minister (February 7, 1996 to October 31, 1997), Chairman of the Committee for European integration (October 15, 1996 to October 31, 1997), Foreign Minister (October 19, 2001 to January 4, 2005) and the Sejm Marshal (January 5, 2005 to October 18, 2005). From 1989 to 2005 he was also a member of the Sejm and from 2007 to 2015 a member of the Senate . Since May 2015 Cimoszewicz has been committed to the Agency for the Modernization of Ukraine (AMU) as head of the anti-corruption working group.

education

Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz is a graduate of the XIX. General Education Lyceum in Warsaw and the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw (1972). In 1978 he earned the title of Dr. jur. and specialized in international law . From 1972 to 1985 he worked first as an assistant and then as an adjunct at the Institute for International Law at the University of Warsaw. From 1980 to 1981 he was a Fulbright scholar at Columbia University in New York .

Political activity in the People's Republic

Cimoszewicz began his political career in the People's Republic as a functionary in various youth organizations. Among other things, he was a member of the Socialist Youth Association (Związek Młodzieży Socjalistycznej) from 1968 to 1973 and he was elected chairman of the Polish Student Union at the University of Warsaw in 1972. From 1971 until its self-dissolution in January 1990, he belonged to the Polish United Workers' Party ( Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza , PZPR). During his work at the university, he was secretary of the party's university commission. In 1985 he retired from politics and moved to Kalinówka Kościelna in today's Podlaskie Voivodeship , where he took care of his in-laws' farm.

He returned to politics after the changes brought about by the round table and became a member of the PZPR in the Sejm in 1989 and 1990 .

Political activity in the Third Republic

In 1990 he ran for the presidential election and achieved fourth place with 9.21% of the validly cast votes. From 1991 to 1993 he was chairman of the SLD election committee .

From 1995 to 1997 he led a social democratic government as prime minister . From 2001 to 2005 he was Foreign Minister in the Leszek Miller and Marek Belka government . On January 5, 2005, he was elected President of Parliament ( Sejm Marshal ) by the Sejm . He replaced Józef Oleksy . His successor as Foreign Minister was his deputy Adam Daniel Rotfeld .

Cimoszewicz was the SLD candidate in the state presidential elections on October 9, 2005 and, according to opinion polls, was at times the most promising candidate for the highest office in the state. However, the negative campaign in the mass media, based on allegations of fraud by his former assistant Anna Jarucka, caused public opinion polls to collapse. Then Cimoszewicz withdrew his candidacy on September 14th in this context. However, the documents that were supposed to incriminate Cimoszewicz turned out to be forged with the help of a copier , with an alleged signature of Cimoszewicz being a facsimile . Jarucka was sentenced in May 2010 to one and a half years imprisonment on probation for false testimony , the suppression of documents and forgery .

In the parliamentary elections on October 21, 2007, he was elected to the Senate as one of three representatives of the Białystok constituency and the only independent alongside 60 PO and 39 PiS senators . In the 2011 elections he defended his position successfully.

Honors

Cimoszewicz is a recipient of the Order of Merit from France and Greece . He was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from two American universities.
