Death Grips is an American music trio that was formed in 2010. The band includes rapper and singer MC Ride, drummer Zach Hill and producer Andy Morin. The music of Death Grips cannot be assigned to a specific genre , but makes use of hip-hop , punk rock , electro , noise and industrial to a large extent . The band enjoys great popularity among critics, the magazine The Skinny awarded them the title "the most important band of the 21st century" and their works are consistently very well reviewed on Metacritic . In 2014, they announced their separation, which now as a PR campaign for their 2015 published double album The Powers That B has been found.

history

Foundation and first publications (2010-2011)

Death Grips come from Sacramento, California . Zach Hill was previously active as a solo artist and drummer for the band Hella. Burnett had already appeared under the pseudonym MxlPxl in a rap group called Fyre, which consisted of him and his brother. After the brother left the band due to his engagement, Burnett dropped out of his studies and founded the group Death Grips on December 21, 2010 with his then-neighbor Zach Hill. As his stage name he finally adopted MC Ride, under which he is still active today.

A few days later Andy Morin joined the duo under the pseudonym Flatlander, in which he has always played the role of producer and the group released the song Full Moon (Death Classic) as a teaser for their upcoming self-titled EP . It received relatively little attention, but it was the starting shot for their first mixtape , which was released on April 25, 2011 under the name Exmilitary for free download and has new mixed versions of older songs as well as some new releases.

The concept of the mixtape was dark and nihilistic and thematized the spiritual journey of a nameless protagonist, which is characterized by hatred , aggression , Satanism , occultism , drug abuse and acts of violence . This is underlined by the claustrophobic instrumentals, the use of MC Ride's voices and the selection of samples and noises, including a speech by Charles Manson .

The mixtape quickly spread across the internet and received critical acclaim. The music critic Anthony Fantano, for example, who runs the most successful music blog on YouTube under the name theneedledrop , placed the mixtape at number 2 of the best releases of the year and described Death Grips as the "future of hip-hop". In the Death Grips fan base, Fantano is considered to be instrumental in the group's increasing popularity and has also reviewed later releases almost exclusively positively. Death Grips themselves later expressed their surprise at the sudden whirlwind, as none of the band members apart from Hill were really well known.

First Contract and The Money Store (2012)

In 2012, Death Grips were signed by the American record label Epic Records , on which two studio albums should be released in the same year. In March 2012, The Fever (Aye Aye), the first single from Death Grips debut album, was released, which was released on April 21, 2012 under the name The Money Store . In addition to The Fever (Aye Aye), the singles Get Got and Blackjack were released from the album , for which videos were also released. Due to popular demand, videos for the songs Hustle Bones and I've seen Footage were also released .

In contrast to Exmilitary , The Money Store does not follow a direct concept, but rather is to be understood as a kind of collection of anecdotes from MC Ride's life, which consists of criticism of capitalism , police violence , drug abuse and depression . Those topics are dealt with at the beginning through self-doubt , later through various excesses of sex and violence and drug abuse and finally through spiritual processes. Omnipresent here is the topic of globalization and the slow dulling towards atrocities and injustice due to the Internet, which, according to Ride, is beginning to displace people's true emotional world and alienate them more and more from their usual nature. To support his thesis, MC Ride uses theories of various philosophers and writers , such as Friedrich Nietzsche , Iwan Sergejewitsch Turgenew and Aleister Crowley .

The album was received very positively by critics and is still regarded as the band's magnum opus in the eyes of many fans and critics . Mike Diver of drownedinsound.com gave the album full marks and called it "Album of the Year". Anthony Fantano also dealt with the band again and awarded The Money Store the full number of points for the first of three times in his nine-year career. In his eyes, the album is "one of the best albums of the last decade" and, despite its aggression and uniqueness, would "set new standards in terms of songwriting and presentation". In Fantano's list of the best albums of 2012, the album reached first place.

In May the band finally went on the Money Store tour , which was canceled after a short time because they wanted to concentrate on their second album. The campaign caused a lot of displeasure among fans and their label.

No Love Deep Web and Contract Termination (2012)

After a working phase of four months, the band's second album was finally announced, which was to be called No Love . Shortly before the album title was announced, it was finally changed to No Love Deep Web , as Hill said it would better reflect the concept, since No Love is only the first half. The album caused controversy even before it was released because the official album cover shows Zach Hill's erect penis, on which Edding says No Love Deep Web . The photo was taken at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles , where major parts of the album were created. Ride himself expressed outrage about the controversy and called it the "typical hypocrisy of the media", in which sex and violence are subliminally the order of the day, be it direct, be it "obscene". In his eyes, he regrets everyone who only sees a penis on the cover instead of “just a nice photo”. The band resolutely refused any demands by the label to replace the cover with an alternative image. Instead, the penis was replaced by a black bar in public places and on YouTube , as a "consequence of the hypocrisy".

On October 1, 2012, the album was uploaded by the band to YouTube, Twitter , Soundcloud and various file sharing sites, including BitTorrent, without the permission of Epic Records . The label was angry about the campaign because it did not want to schedule the album to be released before 2013. Ride expressed himself ironically by insisting several times that the album was "finished before 2013". The consequence came not much later through a contract termination by Epic Records on November 1st, 2012, as well as a clear announcement that they would not publish and finance the album. Various emails from angry employees of the label were then published by the band on Facebook for amusement . Due to her later contract with Harvest Records , the album was finally also available as a physical sound carrier from 2015.

Stylistically, No Love Deep Web differs significantly from the band's previous releases, for example the Roland TR-808 was used for most of the album , instead of the usual Zach Hill's own drum parts. The use of samples has been greatly reduced, only the song Artificial Death in the West uses to Being Sucked in Again by Wire .

The album is often referred to as the band's darkest yet, both in terms of sound and subject matter. As with Exmilitary , it is a concept album that takes up the topic of the omnipresence of the Internet and its devastating consequences, as dealt with in The Money Store . The protagonist of the album experienced several setbacks in his life, so he takes refuge in the Internet and in this torture fantasies acting out, drug consumed and in a circle of pathological Internet Sex Addiction and violent pornography device, "dies" finally to his right personality and only his online - Personality stays alive.

Like its predecessors, No Love Deep Web was received very positively and praised by critics for its complexity and peculiarity. Especially MC Ride's lyrical skills were highlighted.

Death Grips, Live in New York

Government Plates and contract with Harvest Records (2013)

In May 2013, Hill announced that he would write the script for a film in which Death Grips would be involved in the soundtrack. In the course of the announcement, he also announced that Death Grips would be working on their third album. On July 8th of that year it was also announced that the album would be released through Harvest Records , which Death Grips have signed after they left Epic Records .

On November 13th, Government Plates was distributed free of charge via its website, initially without a label. The song Birds , a reinterpretation of Charles Bukowski's poem Bluebird , was released as the first single and is given a guitar play by the actor Robert Pattinson . The second single was You Might Think He Loves You for Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat . Music videos were shot for all eleven songs on the album. The band themselves didn't call Government Plates an official album, but rather an "intermediate stage" of their musical development.

Thematically, the album again deals with subjects such as depression , suicide and violence , but is less direct and more poetic. Thus, Big House , for example, a critique of our society today is, in which, according Ride materialism and consumption is a kind of competition has become. Ride sees himself as a victim of those frustrating circumstances from which his obsession with violence and atrocity should arise ( This Is Violence Now (Don't Get Me Wrong) ). Birds deals with the same topic , in which it is poetically portrayed that Ride would build a facade with increasing awareness.

Contrary to their previous releases, Government Plates was received in two ways by fans and critics. Even Fantano, who previously included all of the band's releases in his favorites list, rated the album with six out of ten points and described it as Death Grips "the most aggressive [...] and yet the most repetitive and half-finished album". With songs like Anne Bonny , Two Heavens and You Might Think He Loves You for Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat , the most succinct Death Grips songs are represented on the album, but also Total failures like Feels Like A Wheel .

On January 19, 2014, the album was finally released on Harvest Records as a physical sound carrier.

Niggas on the Moon and the supposed breakup (2014-2015)

On May 15, 2014 it was announced that Death Grips would be touring with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden on their summer tour. The band used this occasion to announce their double album The Powers That B , which would consist of two halves, of which the first Niggas on the Moon should be released for download before the album is released. The second half called Jenny Death should finally follow in November 2014 and in December of the same year both halves should be physically and digitally buyable as The Powers That B.

On June 8, 2014, Niggas on the Moon was released for free download on their official website. On the release, the group worked closely with the Icelandic musician Björk , who recorded various vocal samples and made Zach Hill available for production. He also used them for the eight songs on the album, which is special in that Björk is the first collaboration for Death Grips. Previously, the group intentionally stayed away from collaborations with other musicians.

After the group withdrew from the public again after the publication of Niggas on the Moon , they surprisingly announced their breakup on July 2, 2014 and canceled all planned concerts. The reason they stated was that they had reached their top form ("We are now at our best"). After the publication of The Powers That B, this breakup turned out to be a PR campaign and the band announced that they would continue to make music ("You're right, we might make some more").

On October 10, 2014, the group announced the completion of their double album and the corresponding album cover via Facebook. In addition, on December 9, 2014, Inanimate Sensation, the first single from Jenny Death and thus The Powers That B and video was released.

Fashion Week and Release of The Powers That B (2015)

On January 4, 2015, Andy Morin and Zach Hill released the instrumental album Fashion Week without notice . The song titles, which have the names Runway J , Runway E , Runway N, etc., formed a message here. If the letters are put together after the word "Runway", the phrase "Jenny Death When" comes out, a clear reference to the second half of the album The Powers That B called Jenny Death , which has not yet been released despite the announcement. Because of this cryptic message, fans suspected the release of the double album in February, as London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week take place there. This wasn't the case, but an announcement from Death Grips in February via a previously unknown Twitter account (@bbpoltergeist) that the album would be released on March 31st and that it would be available for pre-order from March 17th.

With On GP and The Powers That B , two singles by Jenny Death were released in mid-March and on March 31st, the two halves were finally offered as The Powers That B physically and digitally for purchase. The Powers That B was again received very positively after the rather mixed reactions to Government Plates , especially the second half of Jenny Death was very popular for its complexity, as well as MC Ride's diversity and lyric poetry, but the first half of Niggas on the Moon was also from official criticism highly praised. On GP received an award from Pitchfork Media for "Best Song of the Year" and the album 9 out of 10 points. Anthony Fantano also rated the album with 9 out of 10 points, giving it the second highest rating for a Death Grips release to date. On his list of the best albums of 2015, the album placed second.

Like Exmilitary and No Love Deep Web before , The Powers That B is a concept album that deals with the usual themes of depression , violence and sex , which initially cause frustration and despair, but gradually end in a transcendence in which the band members their old ones Leaving trauma and mistakes behind and finally being "reborn" as Death Grips 2.0 . The first half of the album, Niggas on the Moon , describes the strokes of fate and excesses of MC Ride, while Jenny Death is the transcendent. Ride, who was previously known for cryptic texts and describes himself as a very private person ("I'm a very private person. [...] I have no interest in sharing my personal life with the world. Zero.") reveals a lot from his past on the album. The song Up my Sleeves shows that his mother has passed away and songs like Billy Not Really make it clear that Ride's misogynistic attitude was brought about by the infidelity of his first love.

The announced dissolution of the group is to be understood as an allusion to the album concept in which Death Grips actually separates from itself, but as Death Grips 2.0 undergoes a reincarnation .

On March 24, 2015, the trio officially announced a world tour, which began on June 19 and ended on July 25.

Interview 2016 and Bottomless Pit (2016)

On October 21, 2015, Death Grips published a video on YouTube in which the American actress Karen Black reads scenes from a script written by Zach Hill. The recordings were made in mid-2013 shortly before the death of the actress and indicated that she should play a role in Zach Hills' planned and as yet unrealized film. The video, titled Bottomless Pit , spread quickly on the Internet, not least because of Black himself, which the band took as an opportunity to announce their fifth studio album, which bears the same name.

After a long rest, the trio released the song Hot Head unannounced on Soundcloud and YouTube , with the information that this was the second song by Bottomless Pit . In the course of their album promotion, the band announced an interview which was to be conducted by Matthew Hoffman, host of the show "Tuesdays with Matthew". To the amazement of many fans, that interview was even published as an interview in 2016 on the band's YouTube channel, despite the fact that Death Grips had previously shied away from interviews. But instead of the actual audio track, the interview was completely exchanged for instrumentals that were previously produced by Andy Morin and Zach Hill. According to the band, Hoffman himself was privy to the plan and did not fall for a bad joke as is often assumed. A few days after the video was released, the instrumental EP was released for download. The moderator himself forms the cover.

On March 18, 2016, the group released the album's cover and tracklist on Facebook. The lyrics for the full album were made public on their website on April 19, 2016, as well as the release date, May 6, 2016.

On April 29, the album was made available for free download a week before its official release, and it was released on YouTube on May 5. To further promote the album, the song More Than the Fairy was uploaded on May 30, 2016 , which contains a guest contribution by Les Claypool , the front man of the band Primus . Besides Fuck a Bitch , a collaboration with Kevin Martin, the song is the trio's only collaborative release outside of their own discography.

Bottomless Pit was released on May 6th . The song Eh was released as singles in addition to Hot Head , music videos were released for Eh and the album intro Giving Bad People Good Ideas . The album title is a reference to a cave in Death Valley called Bottomless Pit, in which Charles Manson preached to his followers the so-called Helter Skelter , an apocalyptic future vision that prophesied a race war in 1969.

Bottomless Pit is not a concept album per se, but deals with the loose concept of gained influence and thus the responsibility the band has gained towards their following. Likewise, MC Ride's antipathy for the obsession of many fans who insist on getting insights into his private life. The starting point for this were leaks from various Facebook posts by Ride's father, through which private photos of children and information about Ride were made public for the first time. Ride, who has distanced himself from his father for some time, expresses himself angrily ( Hot Head ), but at the same time gives himself privileges through this behavior. Be it sexually ( Three Bedrooms in a Good Neighborhood ) or for your own amusement ( Giving Bad People Good Ideas ). In spite of this, he is amazed at the band's influence, as he regards their way of marketing their career as infantile ( Trash ) and he is firmly convinced that it is only a temporary phenomenon of the fast-moving internet ( BB Poison ).

Also Bottomless Pit was highly praised by fans and critics, some even call it true magnum opus of the band against the expansive tendency to The Money Store . The renowned Rolling Stone magazine gave it 4 out of 5 stars and credited the band with sounding like "no other band on earth" and still "functioning". Even Anthony Fantano -reviewed album again and thus awarded with a "strong" 9 still the second strongest rating for Death Grips publication, just short of the full score over. In his eyes, the band drives the "art of rough music" to "perfection" and he is very pleased that after all these years, including an alleged separation, the band would still make "simply good music". It placed second on its 2016 favorites list.

Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber) (2017)

On May 22, 2017, Death Grips released a 22-minute song on their YouTube channel under the name Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber) , a reference to the famous martial arts film Tiger and Dragon (English: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) . In the wake of the release, the band announced the release of their sixth studio album. On March 22, 2018 was made public that the album titled Year of the Snitch wear and collaborations with extreme artist Lucas Abela, tool - bassist Justin Chancellor , and Shrek director Andrew Adamson will include. The cover followed on April 6th and the tracklist followed on April 11th in the form of an avant-garde video compilation. The first video release was released on May 5th with Streaky .

style

music

Death Grips are known for combining different genres and styles with each other, which is why they cannot be clearly classified into a certain genre. Most often the group makes use of hip-hop , punk , electro , noise and industrial , but especially in the latter publications it also shows more influences from metal , jazz and pop . The most common are the titles Experimental Hip-Hop or Alternative Hip-Hop .

MC Ride's lyrical and vocal performance is just as rare. The majority of the texts are very dark and cryptic, but also deal with personal topics to a certain extent. Despite this private component, the texts are usually described poetically or metaphorically , which usually offers the listener several options for interpreting a song. For the most part, Ride writes clear disapproval of social or political ideologies, but at the same time thematizes autobiographical anecdotes and thought games. Frequent enemy images are police violence , abuse of power , consumer society , religion , the Internet and its fast pace, media propaganda and personality cults , especially in the music sector . Ride counteracts this mostly in extremist mind games in which he celebrates various excesses, be it sexual, through violence or through excessive drug use. Occasionally, he also addresses his depression through submission and self-hatred. Parallel to the poetry, Ride mostly plays with his intonation and prosody , which ranges from dark roars and whispers to crying and hysterical screams .

live

The trio has also often been able to draw attention to itself live due to the extravagance of their performances. Typical elements of those are the destruction of their equipment, Zach Hill's improvised drumming, mostly to the point of self-harm , MC Ride's aggressive personality during performances, Andy Morin's use of live samples and the call for spontaneous, mostly violent actions by the Spectators across from the band. In addition, Death Grips improvise essential parts of their performances.

MC Ride himself described his persona during the live performances as "rash" and "spontaneous", as this would make the "animalistic in MC Ride" clearer. This manifests itself among other things through his upper body-free appearance, his improvised dance interludes and spontaneous nervous breakdowns . He also hits or throws spectators who come on stage back into the audience.

The band's live performances usually do not contain any breaks, nor do they contain quieter songs. Zach Hill in particular has collapsed several times in the past, but continued to play immediately if he was conscious. Laser shows and pyrotechnics are often part of the program.

Music videos

The band usually takes on the direction and post-production of the music videos themselves. Visually, the videos usually differ from the norm in that they are often kept in low fidelity and deliberately denigrated through the intensive use of color or filters. These filters range from shifted anaglyph 3D glasses to negative effects to the use of fish-eye lenses . In terms of content, the videos are entirely variable. In some places Andy Morins is shown peeling a banana, from time to time the videos are completely computer-animated and in some only MC Ride can be seen crying in front of the camera. In the music video for I Break Mirrors With My Face in The United States, for example, the actual song is played twice, once attached to the camera on Zach Hill's drumstick and once to MC Ride's microphone .

Influence in today's pop culture

Personalities

Various well-known musicians have announced themselves as fans of the band over the years. Icelandic singer , producer and actress Björk asked the band to collaborate on their album Bastard , a remix album by Biophilia . In return, she recorded vocal tracks and made them available to the band exclusively. Andy Morin used this extensively on Niggas on the Moon , the first half of their double album The Powers That B .

The award-winning actor Robert Pattinson publicly described himself as a fan of the band and played the guitar on the song Birds for their third studio album Government Plates . Together with the famous singer Beyoncé , another avowed sympathizer of the band, he even visited the group in Sacramento and has always been in good contact with them.

Multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor , who almost went on a summer tour with Death Grips, was also enthusiastic about the band and particularly praised No Love Deep Web and The Powers That B for their style and complexity.

Another well-known admirer of the band is the rapper Tyler, the Creator , who referred to the band as "his meth" and often supported the band live.

But the band also had an influence on the creation of world-famous albums. Donny McCaslin stated that the now deceased exceptional artist David Bowie was significantly influenced by Death Grips during the creation of his last album Blackstar and Sergio Pizzorno from Kasabian also announced the band as a source of inspiration for his album 48:13 .

Other personalities are the comedian Eric André , the musician Annie Clark , Tom Morello , former guitarist of the band Rage Against the Machine , the actor Fred Armisen , Mike Shinoda , rapper of the band Linkin Park , Corey Taylor , singer of the band Slipknot , punk rock legend Iggy Pop and the whole band from Pearl Jam .

In video games, film and television

The song Hacker from the album The Money Store is part of the soundtrack of the video game Battlefield Hardline . Various series also used songs from the group, including BoJack Horseman and Animals.

The song You Might Think He Loves You For Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat was used in an advertisement for the Adidas Predator and Hot Head was used in the teaser trailer for the Atlanta series .
