The term of the Derby d'Italia was the first time in the late 1960s, when Juventus in the 1966/67 season with a point ahead of the internationally successful Inter Milan champion was. As a result, the term was created by the journalist Gianni Brera . Brera's thought can be traced back to the dominance of the two teams in the years after the league was founded. The term was strengthened by the fact that Juventus and Inter were the only clubs that played consistently in Serie A until Juve's forced relegation as a result of the manipulation scandal in 2006 .

However, between 2006 and 2010, Inter were the more successful side when they dominated the championship with five consecutive titles. Since the 2011/12 season, however, Juve has been the dominant team again, as they have been able to celebrate eight titles in a row so far.
