The German Pfandbriefbank AG (promotional abbreviation pbb ) is a German financial institution headquartered in Garching near Munich . It emerged from the merger of various commercial banks and mortgage lenders. The founding institute was Bayerische Handelsbank AG on April 12, 1869 (later renamed, first HVB Real Estate Bank AG, later Hypo Real Estate Bank AG) to which Nürnberger Hypothekenbank AG and Süddeutsche Bodencreditbank AG merged from 2001 . After the takeover of Hypo Real Estate Bank International AG (the previously renamed Württembergische Hypothekenbank AG) and its merger, DEPFA Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG was merged from the acquired DEPFA group into Hypo Real Estate Bank AG. In 2009, Hypo Real Estate Bank AG was renamed Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG. The Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG, renamed Bayerische Handelsbank, is one of the oldest existing banks in Germany. The founding documents are part of the Bavarian Main State Archives in Munich (BayHStA, MF 58455).
After the state rescue in the financial crisis from 2007 , Hypo Real Estate Holding AG had to privatize Deutsche Pfandbriefbank by 2015 at the behest of the EU Commission . Pbb's IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange took place on July 16, 2015. A few days later, the asset manager MainFirst reported a stake of 5.1 percent and Lancaster Investment Management a stake of 4.83 percent in pbb's shares . The Federal Republic of Germany was the largest single shareholder via HRE with 20 percent until this share was reduced to 3.5 percent in May 2018.
Deutsche Pfandbriefbank has been a member of the SDAX since June 22, 2020 .
