The league was in season 2019/20 as in the previous year played in two regional groups North and South. It was organized by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and is the third highest division in German ice hockey . The season started in September 2019. On March 11, 2020, the DEB's play-offs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . However, the ascents and descents have been suspended for this season.

Oberliga Nord

The champions of the regional leagues North, ECW Sande , West, Herford EV , and East, Schönheider Wölfe renounced the promotion. The Krefeld EV 1981, the main club of the DEL Club Krefeld Pinguine , applied for the Oberliga Nord and competed with a U23 team. The EC Harzer Falken withdrew to the Regionalliga Nord after opening insolvency proceedings . The ECC Preussen Berlin was staying athletic, but could apply as substitutes for a license. The license was granted under conditions that the ECC could not meet and therefore withdrew to the Regionalliga Ost.

From September 21, 2019 to March 3, 2020, the participants played in a double round of places 1–6 for direct qualification for the promotion playoffs to DEL2. Subsequently, two further participants could qualify for the promotion playoffs in a pre-playoff round in the best-of-three mode of those placed 7-10. For positions 11 and 12, the season was over after the main round.

The pre-playoffs for participation in the round of 16 were held between March 6, 2020 and March 10, 2020 in the " best-of-three " mode .

Oberliga Süd

The EV Landshut rose to the DEL2. Deggendorfer SC was relegated from the DEL2. The EV Füssen was promoted from the Bayernliga. The EHC Waldkraiburg Die Löwen has been relegated to the Bayern League. The champions of the Regionalliga Südwest, SC Bietigheim-Bissingen, could not move up to the top division as a second representative of the DEL2 club Bietigheim Steelers .

The twelve teams played a main round with 32 games per team, consisting of a single round and a further single round in two regional groups (left / right column of the following table):

The top ten qualified for the championship round. First place in this round was the champions of the Oberliga Süd. Places one to eight were qualified for participation in the joint play-offs with Group North. The teams in places 11 and 12 in the main round played a dovetailing round with the best eight teams in the Bayern League .

Cancellation of the play-offs

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , all ice hockey leagues in Germany were stopped prematurely on March 11, 2020 for the 2019/20 season.
