An ice day is the meteorological-climatological term for a day on which the air temperature always remains below 0 ° C. If the temperature does not exceed freezing point for a long time, the term permafrost is also used. An ice day is always counted as a frost day, whereby the difference between frost and ice days is called frost change days .

Mostly, however, the plural of ice days is used, which indicates the number of ice days for a period, for example a month or a winter . The sum of the ice days in a winter is a good comparison value for its severity. This makes it easy to compare the winters of different years or the climate of different regions in one period.

Ice days were of great importance when ice was still obtained from natural cold for cooling purposes, especially on the ice gallows .
